Calling for submissions for the 3rd Photo Contest!
Edited on Sat Feb-19-05 12:44 AM by intheflow
The winning theme is CEMETERIES. Submissions accepted starting now. I'll accept submissions until I get 10 photos or February 25th, whichever comes first. The contest will post in the Lounge on the 26th, around 6pm EST. Cemeteries aren't my forte, so I'm really looking forward to what you all submit! :hi:

My apologies for the delay in posting for those of you in eastern and central time zones. It's still the 18th in intheflowLand. The delay was that I had to both find and scan in my own cemetery photos (of course!).

These first two photos are from a pet cemetery in Colorado Springs. (The bull dog's name was Gertie.)

This cemetery is in Monson, MA...................And this one is the oldest cemetery in my hometown, Wilbraham, MA.

2. Thanks for those Mass cemetery ones...
and speaking of Massachusetts...

How would everyone feel about me entering something such as this under the them of cemeteries...

Otherwise, I have tons of them...

3. Complex question.
I guess it depends on where the question of 'THEME' is applied. Is it only in the acceptance and not the judging/evaluation?

Further, is "Ghost Town" the same as "Cemetery"? I can understand how it might be an inventive approach to the thematic compositon that I proposed, if Cemetery+Building were the composition. But that approach gained virtually no support in here.

9. Again, if there had been a tie I would have ruled in favor of
"cemetery buildings" and I would think your "dead park" photos eligible. But since the clear winner was cemeteries, I'm thinking it means cemeteries. Sorry!

Although perhaps this will force you to step away from the keyboard. What's your weather like today?

I love black and white photos, great use of dark and lights.

I've seen a few others similar to that around here, which is why I thought the cemetery theme was approprate...can't wait to see what else comes up...

8. They way I always thought about it was that the previous entries
could still post a photo, but priority will be given to those who did not enter the last contest...so if there are only seven "new" entries, the remaining three slots could be filled...or not, depends on how much interest there is in it this time?

11. Winners are ineligivle to enter, true, but
I agree with Longgrain, we still want to see what you would have entered if you could have entered!

The Wilbraham cemetery is right next to my high school. It's where we used to sneak off to to neck and smoke illegal substances after school. It was a big party school, so a few of our buddies were buried there from drunk driving accidents; made us feel like we were still partying with them. (Who says the party crowd isn't spiritual?)

14. I've only got one cemetary picture online.
I wanted to "paint" it in colors that are a cross between decay and a cheap whore.

This is the old section of the oldest cemetery in Lexington Ky. People are not allowed in this part of the cemetery, so I went there.

An old one from before I knew too much about photography but I still like it. Taken by the light of a full moon in a cemetery that me and my girlfriend at the time used to sneak into late at night. The original was in color but it was so faint that it worked better in b/w.

43. My entry
It's not a cemetary... but an etching off the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial Wall. Clarence Brown was my first piano teacher. In 1969, he told a very tearful 8-year-old girl that he had been drafted and was going to Vietnam. He died in that war, but not before giving inspiration to that girl to become a musician and a progressive against violence.

I took several shots with different backgrounds... pick the one you like best.

Niceties out of the way, each of these photos evokes a different feeling in me. So I feel like it's too much pressure for me to pick any of the photos, since I don't really know either you or him. Which photo moves you the most?

Also, would you please name your entry? Thanks, RFFL.

OK, I rule that the top picture can be entered as 3 views. After all, RagingInMiami accented his photo with color. Your piece is conceptual but still photography.

However, I prefer the second entry to the first. Since that already splits the vote, anyone else want to weigh in? I'll post majority rule in the contest. Unless no one else weighs in, then I'm going with my favorite. (Sorry, Longgrain.)

54. Here's my entry.
I didn't have time to stop where I wanted, and when I finally did so today, the place was snowed in. This is an old cemetary and empty church. I don't think it's used anymore, and is ringed in on all 4 sides. There is a road in front, railroad tracks in the rear, and factories on each side. But it stuck me as something needing sepia, and I was going for the vintage postcard look.

So I will name this: Postcard

64. D'oh!
This thread has obviously been invaded by typo imps... well, at least they've infiltrated my posts. :silly:

Name correction duly noted. I'll make sure it's right when it comes time to acknowledge all photographers.

When I was a freshman in high school, my best friend and I watched Night of the Living Dead one day after school. We lived down the street from Zachary Taylor cemetery. So, she put on a sheet and took a butcher knife and ran around the cemetery while I took her picture...memories. How funny. We used to also go there and smoke cigarettes on the graves. We would pull up the sod and stick our butts under the grass..seems so stupid now, but it was our daily after school ritual.
Anyway, here is a picture from then. I didn't have any time to go shoot the cemeteries around here but will add it to my homework assignments.

74. Thanks. I live about 100 yards from a cemetery, like the Brazilian one,
here in New Orleans - it was my playground during childhood. I have lots of photos (including jazz funerals) but I don't know where they are right now and they need to be scanned. If I had a decent camera, I'd take more of our cemetery and submit them.

... but I'm not a real photographer. I'm just a 'photo-vandal' who takes low res AP photos and draws on them. :D

I thought I'd enter this one for grins. This was taken behind an old Methodist church and cemetery in Ontario. I don't know if they were just storing the tombstone in the outhouse, or if there was some sort of terrible accident, or what.

104. I personally like it better than 'Family Plot' ...
... but I'm personally very, very keen on the ephemerals and place high value on provocative photos. That's just my personal take.

I try hard to NEVER imply that, when it comes to opinion and taste, there's some empirical 'best' or 'good'. I'm particularly conscious of this during "Oscar season" when so many folks get up in arms about what's, after all, an opinion. The Academy has every right to their opinion - without my argument. Conversely, so do I. I feel absolutely no threat to my own self-esteem that I happen to love 'Groundhog Day' as one of my very favorite movies, along with 'Shakespeare In Love.'

105. I was really torn between the two and the only reason I ended up going
with family plot was cause my photoshop froze up and I was really frustrated and did not want to wait for it to boot back up again so I just submitted it.
I also did not want to get left out of the contest.
But your opinion means a lot cause I know you have a tendency to really analyze photos, so if it's all right with Intheflow, I think I will change it.

106. I appreciate your respect for my opinion ... but take care.
Edited on Wed Feb-23-05 07:17 PM by TahitiNut
The very reasons I migh like it are reasons that others would react negatively. Such an opinion may be every bit as valid as mine. It's really yours that counts, in the final analysis - no matter what the vote is.

Indeed, I have a penchant for favoring art which provokes a response from me - even if that response is a negative one. I like shit-stirring, provocative art -- as long as it's still technically (i.e. technique) well-done.

I should also say it's likely (but not certain) that I'd also vote for 'Family Plot'. I like the 'Godfather-like' tone and theme - a theme that hearkens back to strong familial bonds, even to death.

107. Well it's not really a matter of life and death, no pun intended
It's a very informal contest meant to display our photographs to the rest of DU. But I do think babyland will strike a nerve with most people for the simple reason that these are babies we're talking about. None of them deserve to have died.
Family plot is just a random family, who by the looks of their graves, lead full and fruitful lives.

111. I was thinking of babyland, but my only concern was that I'm not
sure if it's obvious that it is a graveyard for babies. But then again, it is a cemetary theme, so I will go with Babyland.
I should just learn to go with my original thought rather than think about it too much.
