My view is that, if the stuff is effective, then it is having some kind of pharmacological effect, and should be treated like a medication. I'd avoid mixing medicines without expert advice.
From my experience, my doc said valerian root is OK, and it seems to have short-term beneficial effect. Very relaxing, but it loses effectiveness quickly, whether through loss of potency in the bottle, or because of the body compensating. I'm considering weaning myself off of clonopin and going back to the root for occasional use.
St. John's wort was never effective with me, and produced uncomfortable side effects. My doc warned me not to take it in conjunction with psychotropic meds, as he was concerned that there might be side effects. He believes that it does have its own psychotropic effects.
Fish oil might not do any harm, but I didn't experience any benefit over long term use. This is one supplement that my doc suggested to go along with meds. Except for "ask your doctor", this is not intended as medical advice; just as my experience.
