This is from 1994, when Mitt the Shit ran against Ted Kennedy for the US Senate. (Hey, remember those compassionate conservatives? What ever happened to them anyway?)
KENNEDY, ROMNEY DUEL OVER WELFARE REFORM
Don Aucoin, Globe Staff Date: June 17, 1994
Snip
In venturing into the field of welfare reform -- the subject of one of two TV ads Romney is now running -- the candidate stubbed his toe.
First, in a two-page release spelling out 13 principles of "real welfare reform," Romney suggested that work requirements be imposed on "able-bodied adults without dependents" who are on welfare. Yet to be eligible for welfare, adults must have dependents, usually children.
Manning said later that the press release should have stipulated that Romney meant work requirements should be imposed on those recipients whose children are old enough to attend school.
Romney's proposal calls for denying welfare benefits to illegal aliens, or undocumented immigrants.
However, illegal aliens -- the majority of whom work -- are not presently eligible for welfare benefits unless their presence in this country is known to the Immigration and Naturalization Service, according to state Welfare Department officials.
Manning said the candidate was referring to illegal aliens' eligibility for the Women, Infants and Children program, a food program for young mothers with children.
In addition to the get-tough measures, Romney proposed doubling the tax credit given to employers who hire and train welfare recipients, and helping keep people off welfare by offering tax credits for low-income working parents.
Romney, stupid and out-of-touch then, still stupid and out-of-touch now. I bet he still feels that this is what is wrong with America, we give food to the desperately poor children of undocumented workers. What a total friggin bastid he is.
BTW, this 'Profile in Courage' was afraid to challenge John Kerry for his seat back then. He said this to the Boston Globe in August of 1994:
But he thought the election of (former Gov) Weld and Treasurer Joe Malone in 1990 had changed the political landscape in Massachusetts, and made it less daunting for someone like him. Parties were becoming less important, and there were now more registered independents than Democrats in the state.
He agreed with his wife that Kennedy was an irresistable target. In fact, if Sen. John Kerry had been up for reelection this year, Romney wouldn't be running. "Because Ted, from my standpoint, is really the champion of a political philosophy for an entire country whose time has passed," he said. "John Kerry -- his political views will come and go."
