7. I saw that too--I think he'll talk about Lamont, among other things.
I'm liking ABC news more and more, since Charlie Gibson took over. I think he's a real journalist and honest broker. So far anyway; the minute I endorse somebody or some network, they do something to contradict me! :(

I'll be glued to This Week tomorrow morning, needless to say. Somebody said that the bushies have lost the conservative pundits now--like George Will, David Brooks, Bill Buckley. That leaves the neo-cons alone against the world. Even that Ponuru (sp?) dude was talking against them on Newshour.

throws the election to the candidate who can get the most corporate money (too close one to the others).

10. Too late.
Harry Reid obviously wants his state in play for 2008. He has power, he got Levin and the other malcontents to sign off on diluting NH and it's a done deal.

You have to play that hand that's dealt you. So, ramp up for Nevada in '08. Such is life.

12. This was terrific! But
Edited on Sun Aug-20-06 09:45 AM by ProSense
the clips of Cheney and Bush show just how delusional their despicable arguments are. Everyone in the world has move on to the reality that Iraq is in a civil war (There is a post that McCain says we're losing in Iraq). Bush should be strapped into a white coat for making the democracy claim.

Anyway, Kerry's response as to how he would have handled this was terrific. The discussion about terror also showed how much the media has distorted the message, either that or polls really have no validity.

One thing that struck me was the Iraq/Hezbollah/Iran points Senator Kerry made. This is really a frightening turn of events. In all his speeches about Iraq over the past couple of years, including his speech when the Senate voted on his resolution, JK has emphasized the potential for the situation to worsen. I can't imagine why the rest of Congress can't see the urgency for withdrawal and diplomacy.

Speaking of Iraq/Hezbollah/Iran:

Officials see correlation between Hezbollah conflict, Iraq actions

By Larry Kaplow / Cox News Service

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Rocket attacks on a U.S. base in eastern Baghdad doubled during the monthlong war between Israel and Hezbollah, a U.S. Army commander said this week, echoing concerns expressed by other American officials about Iranian support for Shiite militants in Iraq.

Lt. Col. Mark A. Bertolini of the Fourth Infantry Division said the increase in Katyusha rocket attacks on Forward Operating Base Rustamiyah seemed related to the fighting in Lebanon.

Soldiers on the base are under orders to wear body armor and helmets when outdoors. Though the incoming rounds have been sporadic -- usually no more than one or two a day -- they send soldiers scrambling to bunkers at the sound of the base siren.

Snip...

Iraqi Shiites supportive of Hez bollah regularly vent their anger toward the United States, Israel's close ally. "The Middle East is a volatile region," said Bertolini, commander of the 3rd Battalion, 67th Armored Regiment from Fort Hood, Texas. "Everything affects everything else over here."

U.S. officials in recent days accused Iran of stirring up Iraqi Shiite militants.

13. My notes
for those who can't wait for a real transcript.

I believe the president's policy in Iraq is a disaster of catastrophic proportions
Set us back in the region, set the peace process back.
I would have handled with a group of nations.
WOT not centered in iraq, pres keeps trying to push it down Americans' throats
Admin continues to ignore the facts, ignore the truth
Iraq is in civil war
We have to set a date, shift responsibility to Iraqis
Republicans love to deal with slogans but dont' want to deal with reality
absence of diplomacy putting troops at risk
The only way to deal with iraq is politically and diplomatically
Have to bring all the parties in region together incl Syria and Iran

I'm concerned that lieberman is making a repub case uttering almost same words as Cheney
Ned Lamont has been corageous
Lieberman out of step with the people of CT. I believe he's dead wrong with respect to the war
Cheney has been wrong about almost everything he's said about Iraq. Said this would be a cakewalk.
The continued rhetoric of this admin and joe lieberman adopting is a huge mistake.
Night now iran is the big winner in the ME, we're bogged down in iraq.
Ned lamont is getting iraq right
The course of this country in iraq is making the world more dangerous

I'm concerned that the pres doesn't respect the constitution
This is a false choice
We can do this constitutionally
Pres has overstepped authority
Let's have this debate
America is less safe today than we ought to be
9-11 comission gave failing grade to this admin in security

re the inevitable '08 questions, basically too early

30. his vultures are coming home to roost.
I agree, * looks worse and worse as time goes on, if that's possible. He struggles to get something out, and then it is some simplistic slogan that a sixth grader could come up with. Or he's boasting and bragging about something he didn't do. I really think that he thinks that saying it can make it so--I suppose he's had this experience in his life up until now. But the people are finally seeing that the emperor has no clothes. At least most of them: there are still the die-hards on Washington Journal who call up and try to scare everybody about the Democrats taking over and destroying the country, saying that * is one of the few men brave enough to fight the war on terror. :puke:

Sorry about the digression into * country. Back to our regularly scheduled JK thread! :)

32. a few more things that I caught:
First question was whether Hezbollah was defeated: Says they were set back but at a greater cost to Israel than Israel expected. The future depends on the ceasefire holding and Res. 1701, and now well the Lebanese gov't. is able to regain control.

During the Lamont discussion: Iraq is crying out for a diplomatic solution to this civil war. Iran is happy about us being there--they are winning because we are bogged down in Iraq. Lamont being right on the issues is more important than being experienced. All of us(Senators) were inexperienced at some point.

Kerry Calls Lieberman the New Cheney

Senator Labels Bush Iraq Policy 'Disaster,' Lieberman Bid 'Huge Mistake'

By ED O'KEEFE

Aug. 20, 2006 -- - Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., blasted fellow a Democrat, Sen. Joe Lieberman, for continuing his bid in the Connecticut Senate race despite a narrow loss to newcomer Ned Lamont in the Democratic primary earlier this month.

"I'm concerned that is making a Republican case," Kerry told ABC News' "This Week with George Stephanopoulos" in an exclusive appearance.

Kerry accused the 2000 Democratic vice presidential candidate of "adopting the rhetoric of Dick Cheney," on the issue of Iraq.

"Joe Lieberman is out of step with the people of Connecticut," Kerry added, insisting Lieberman's stance on Iraq, "shows you just why he got in trouble with the Democrats there."

Kerry called Lieberman's independent bid a "huge mistake" and applauded businessman-turned-politician Lamont as "courageous" for challenging Lieberman on the war.

-Atrios 12:05 PM

He also abbreviates McCain on MTP:

Incoherent

Shorter John McCain on MTP (Russert-free, thankfully):

The administration has done the wrong thing for the last 3 and a half years which leaves us with no option other than staying the course.

I guess this is what counts for "seriousness" on foreign policy in Beltwayland.
