It was taken after his TBA speech, where he was practically mobbed. Luckily, Tay got us great seats, and I was able to snap that pic.

21. Ah, must be Friday. And we need and deserve a pic thread

Faneuil Hall, April, 2006.

That speech and the one at Take Back America still get me. The Faneuil Hall speech in April was very, very emotional. There was a feeling in that room on that day that you just don't often get at these events. All the speakers were excellent and all the speakers spoke from the heart. The build-up before Sen. Kerry spoke was just amazing. His speech had that tone to it, it was just very, very special. Maybe it was the Hall, maybe the sense that enough was enough and these Admin people had to called out in no uncertain terms and maybe it was that emotional and moral sense of urgency that was in that remarkable speech, but that was really something. I wish you all could have been in that room that day. IMHO, that was one for the ages. It really was.

The good Senator is also known for producing these moments, almost painful to observe, when he seems to reach down deep and bring something remarkable back from within. This is not a guy who feels that he needs to share this side of himself all the time. (I know that.) Everyone knows that here. He is, in a way, a very private person. It's one of those 'complications' about Kerry that Mass people are at a loss to explain sometimes. Here is a very public person, but with obviously private and guarded areas. I understand that.

That's why when you get these incredible speeches, you really feel like you have been there to witness something. I just felt that at this speech. It reminded me of those 'moments' in the past Senate campaigns that were just, ahm, well, ahm, remarkable. Maybe it was just a little peek at the soul, the knowledge that whatever wisdom or memory he is bringing back is not without cost and that sharing it is not done on a whim. These are almost 'earned moments' and I was conscious of that happening then. Let me tell you, it was really something. Again, I wish you all could have been there. (And yeah, he can always be that good.) But, damn, there isn't anyone else that when I hear them speak, I wonder what the cost of this was, personally. I never felt ths with Clinton, it's just that level of 'gravitas' that is different with Kerry. I get that little voice that says you might want to pay attention to this, it's going to really be something. And so it was.

25. What you wrote is so beautilful. what you said about that day is so true.
The feeling throughout all the speeches was very intense. After the speech, everyone seemed to be looking at each other as if to confirm that it was what they thought it was. It also seemed at the end as if no one wanted to leave - people moved very very slowly out of the building.

I agree with you that there is no other speaker comes close to this. Also, for a very very serious speech there was an incredible amount of applause. With almost every sentence, it seemed that it was the senmtence you would remember - then the next thought was better.

I am so so glad that sfter hearing me talk about it for 3 days - my husband suggested it wasn't silly to drive to Boston - and I am so glad I did. The speech and meeting all of the JK group people there was fantastic.

That picture is really very good. Enjoy the Monday Faneuil Hall speech! I think that must be Kerry's favorite public space in Boston too.

27. There was a sense of that at the TBA speech,
Edited on Fri Jul-28-06 09:15 PM by TayTay
but it was also different. I got up early to get to the Hotel by 7:00 am to reserve 9 seats for people. (Ahm, not actually very nice of me. Those seats were supposed to be reserved for conferees from Maryland, Virgina and DC. But, ahm, you snooze, you lose, so I claimed them early and held on to them.)

We had no idea what kind of a reception Kerry would receive from this decidedly liberal gathering. (We spend too much time in GD and tend to think everyone is hyper-critical.) There were other groups in the crowd who had brought banners and signs to protest the war and demand action from the elected officials who were speaking. We had no idea if they would applaud or heckle or what.

Again, this was another 'Kerry moment.' (Yeah, I've heard that phrase used in Mass to describe other, ahm, times when the Senator would just say something that was just memorable, but in that 'I pulled this up from deep within' way. It's hard to explain. But damn, do I know it when I see/hear it.) The Senator could have repeated his April speech and he would have won over the crowd. Several parts of the speech were taken from the Boston speech verbatim. But that wasn't the most memorable moment. The most memorable moment was that confessional line that I put in my .sig today. The Senator had moved beyond just the bare facts that the war was misconceived and the product of lies. (Sentences like that were sure fire crowd pleasers for this event and would have been enough.) He had moved beyond litany of horrors that mark this doomed policy in Iraq. He made it personal.

Kerry looked straight out at the crowd and said that we needed to acknowledge that the war itself, the fundamental act of going to Iraq, no matter what the reason, was wrong. He then kept that straight ahead eye contact and said, "and I was wrong to vote for it." It was a personal confession, that attempt to morally come to grips with all that has happened and then say it in clear and precise words that were unmistakable. (Go back and watch this video at Take Back America. Watch how the good Senator struggles through the applause to preserve both of these clauses as a single thought. He wanted both parts out as a whole, one leading to another. Remarkable.) It was, for me anyway, a 'Kerry moment." (Whome, tell me you know what I mean here about 'Kerry moments.' No one else does this. Not here and I don't think nationally either. It's just different and special. Again, it's so personal and the sense of this having been the result of deep thought and conscience is clear.)

33. thanks for writing this.
I know what you mean, even though I wasn't there that day. He has a deep reservoir of thoughts, convictions, principles, knowledge, experience--call it wisdom--and you know he will never fail to apply them to try to solve whatever problem comes up. That adds up to a great statesman and great leader. And that's why we believe in John Kerry.

That's his, 'Don't give me that bullshit, I see right through you' look. Sigh!

Seriously, if you are telling the truth at a hearing, you have nothing to worry about, as long as you have done your homework and are prepared. But if you are trying to hide something or feed the good Senator a line, just watch it.

Sigh! The only thing better would be a pic with the glasses on.

The Senator arrives late for the White House ceremony honoring the Boston Red Sox World Chamipnship. March 2005. (Wrong friggin Presdient was there. Spoiled the whole ceremony.) I'm sorry but the words, 'BE vewwy, vewwy quiet. I'm hunting Republican liars' come to mind in this pic.

Senator Kerry arrives for the cremony in April 2005 to honor the World Championship New England Patriots. Is it me or is that a really, really, ahm, interesting pic. Ooooh!

No Tom, you have to run as a Democrat. How could anyone who quarterbacked for NEw England even consider running as 'one of them?' Sen. Kerry does the Lord's work and tries to convince Tom Brady to turn from the Repubs and embrace life as a Democrat. Tom Terrific doesn't commit. Sigh!

43. One of my favorite, albeit sad and solemn, pics of Sen. Kerry
Edited on Sun Jul-30-06 01:02 PM by TayTay

Sens. Edward M. Kennedy and John F. Kerry attend the funeral at Arlington for Lance Cpl. Dimitrios Gavriel, a Massachusetts native. (At Arlington National Cemetary, Nov, 2004.)

I often think of this picture because it reminds me of why I am still here, still in this group, still on the 'internets' and so forth. It's because I think Sen. Kerry understands what families like this are going through. I think he understands a bit of what it's like to be in a war and to have mistakes lead to the deaths of the young and to have to write letters home to families. I think he utterly, in a soul-deep way, knows that you never ask for this kind of sacrifice unless it is asbolutely needed and justified. It's in his eyes. He stone-cold knows this. I wish we had someone in the White House who knew it as well.

"And here and now we must insist again that fidelity, honor, and love of country demand untrammeled debate and open dissent. At no time is that truer than in the midst of a war rooted in deceit and justified by continuing deception. For what is at stake here is nothing less than life itself. As the statesman Edmund Burke once said: "A conscientious man should be cautious how he dealt in blood."

Snip

"The former top operating officer at the Pentagon, a Marine Lieutenant General, said "the commitment of our forces to this fight was done with a casualness and swagger that are the special province of those who have never had to execute these missions--or bury the results."

John Kerry, April 22, 2006
