Elizabeth J. Holtzman One of My Favorite Democrats of All time

HOLTZMAN, Elizabeth, a Representative from New York; born in Brooklyn, N.Y., August 11, 1941; attended public and private schools; B.A., Radcliffe College, 1962; J.D., Harvard Law School, 1965; admitted to the New York bar in 1966 and commenced practice in New York City; Democratic State committeewoman and district leader 1970-1972; assistant to Mayor John V. Lindsay, 1969-1970; founder, Brooklyn Women?s Political Caucus; delegate to Democratic National Convention, 1972; elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-third and to the three succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1973-January 3, 1981); was not a candidate for reelection in 1980 but was an unsuccessful candidate for election to the United States Senate; district attorney, Kings County, Brooklyn, N.Y., 1981-1990; New York City comptroller, 1990-1994; unsuccessful candidate in 1992 for nomination to the United States Senate; resumed the practice of law; is a resident of Brooklyn, N.Y.

1. You know I think I saw her in a history channel thing
She was one of the people who was big on not allowing nazi war criminals to work for the US government, I think it's sick we allowed that to happen, I am not Jewish but I did have relatives killed by the Nazi thugs in WWII.

2. Yes, that was one of her most important actions
as well as being part of Nixon's impeachment. I am very proud of her as a great Jewish woman in politics.
My family was lucky because we left Latvia around the early 1900s. My ancestors sailed from Riga, Latvia all the way to Locust Point (sort of Baltimore's Ellis Island, where all the Eastern Europeans came in.)

Baltimore had a sorta Ellis Island? I did not know that.

4. Well, sort of,
a lot immigrants from Poland, Latvia, and Germany came to Baltimore at the turn of the twentieth century, many were Catholics and Jews. Usually they landed first at Locust Point with name tags pinned to them, like my great-great-great aunt.
