Even though we don't talk about politics very much in my office, I knew that my boss voted for Bush in '04. She made it clear to me before the election that she had "heard some things" about Kerry, and didn't trust him. (I think she was receiving a lot of those mass e-mailings - you know the kind that can be debunked in about two seconds on Snoops.com.)
This morning, she came into the office and told me that her daughter had called her on Sunday night (I was out of the office yesterday) and that an acquaintance of hers (a guy she had a crush on) had been killed in Iraq over the weekend. My boss' daughter lives and works in Fayetteville, home of Fort Bragg where this young soldier was based.
After she told me about this young man's death, she said "I'm really not liking George Bush right now, not at all. I think it was a huge mistake to re-elect him."
As much as I wanted to take joy in her epiphany, I couldn't. This war is just a huge fucking mess and it makes me sad to think that young men and women have to die in order for others to finally see the light.
