John Kerry Reacts to Bush’s Economic Press Conference in Chicago
John Kerry Reacts to Bush’s Economic Press Conference in Chicago
July 7th, 2006 @ 11:48 am

Today, Bush held a press conference following a breakfast meeting with Chicago business leaders at The Museum of Science and Industry, using a picturesque backdrop of Chicago for a photo-op.

AP News reports, "Bush gave a rambling 15 minute opening statement in which he talked about Chicago's vibrant economy, the war on terrorism and the war in Iraq."

Bush also praised the U.S. economy. "Productivity is high, people are better off, people are working," he said.

Hello -- What planet is Bush on?

  • Productivity is high? Not - Slow Growth in Retail Sales Spurs Concern

  • People are better off? Not - From Chicago, a personal look at 'deep poverty'

  • People are working? Not - June job growth weaker than expected

  • John Kerry, the top Democrat on the Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship responded to Bush's press conference saying:

“Today President Bush missed yet another opportunity to actually do something to help small businesses. The president praises the optimism of Illinois businesses, yet more of the state’s businesses closed their doors in 2004 than new businesses were opened. Instead of doing something to address sky-high gas prices, expensive loans and outsourced jobs, this president is holding photo ops touting his policies that are failing small businesses.

“Not once today did President Bush talk about fostering entrepreneurship for every sector of our society. If Washington is going to help small businesses thrive, we have to invest in the innovative ideas and hard work of all small firms, including those owned by minorities, women and veterans. It’s common-sense that’s long overdue.”

    2. we need to hear more of this from not only Kerry,
    but the Democratic Party.

The economy sucks, and people ARE aware of it, even as the MSM props up the facade Bush has erected.

With so many other issues it sometimes gets lost - but the economy is issue #1 for many voters.

    3. The economy is great if you are one of the 'haves.'
The economy is one series of worries after another if you are a 'have not.' My sister-in-law is currently training her replacement to do her job in India. Somebody said gas prices are going up .30 cents again in the next couple of weeks. Interest rates are going up and there are a heck of a lot of people with variable rate and that infernal 'interest-only' mortage accounts that can't sleep too well at night.

Bush is a clueless elitist. He thinks that because his 'haves and have mores' are doing well that the rest of us should be bowing scraping to them. I think the Rethugs are in for a rude awakening this fall.

And does anyone else get just pissed off at how condescending and arrogant this economic pep talks are. * all but commands people to feel better and notice how good things are. What a clueless retard.

    5. I was watching some talking heads show a couple of months ago
Linda Chavez was one of the regulars http://www.lindachavez.org/ and she said something to the effect of - "I can't understand why Bush is getting criticized on the economy - the economy is just burbling along - instead of being criticized he should be getting applauded."

    JUST BURBLING ALONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jesus! That phrase, for some reason, made me angrier than I've been in a long while. These people are truly out of touch - elitists, like you say.

    -----------------

Although the last two weeks at my store have been ok (in that nose just out of the water kind of way) the preceding six weeks were the worst run I've had in the entire eight years I've been doing this. I posted that in GD and had several other business owners say the same thing, both in the thread and through PM's. Things are really bad - much worse than the media is letting on. But, I talk to a lot of people, both customers and business acquaintances, and people do know what's going on. This is a big issue, and the Democratic Party needs to understand that.

Maybe they're reticent to talk down the economy because they're afraid to make it worse (something the Republicans have no problem doing, witness 1999 and Cheney practically talking the nation into a recession all by himself). I don't know. The Iraq war is a major issue - but, DU aside, most people vote with their wallet.

    4. Kerry has to be more vocal on economical and bread and butter issues.
I hope he comes in support of the new minimum wage in MA before Mittens vetoes it, for example.

However, on this issue, he appears to have hurt the sensibility of the IL Democratic governor, who was happy to see Bush support his good record.
