THK Kerry to be Honored with Award in the Field of Suicide Prevention
Teresa Heinz Kerry to be Honored with Award for Excellence in the Field of Suicide Prevention
March 22nd, 2006 @ 10:58 am

As anyone who has lost a loved one to suicide knows, suicide is the most misunderstood cause of death. Not only do those who lose someone they love to suicide not understand why it happened, but those who haven’t misunderstand it even less. There’s a certain stigma surrounding the subject of suicide, people in general don’t like to talk about it. I speak about this with experience in that type of loss, for I have suffered the loss of two people very dear to me, to suicide.

On April 6, Teresa Heinz Kerry, wife of John Kerry, will receive the Aaron T. Beck Award for Excellence in the Field of Suicide Prevention at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) Aaron T. Beck Awards Dinner.

In 1993 Teresa Heinz Kerry established the Heinz Awards in memory of her late husband, U.S. Senator H. John Heinz, III. These awards recognize outstanding individual vision and achievement in a number of fields, including public policy and the human condition. Recipients are given $250,000 to further their work. The Heinz Awards have twice recognized leaders in suicide prevention. Aaron T. Beck of the University of Pennsylvania, earned the Award in 2001 for shedding new light on depression with cognitive therapy. Last year Joseph Rogers, executive director of the Mental Health Association of Southeastern Pennsylvania, earned the award for his work bringing services to people with mental illness.
