Bad news (?) for VA Kerrycrats?
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/3/18/81532/7817

Apparently Webb trounced Harris in some straw poll. Is it a meaningful one?

This is top of the reco list at dkos.

Anyone want to point out some of the issues with webb that have been raised here? I have to go look them up. I know he dissed VVAW pretty heavily. That ought to make anti-war heads explode. But then, it's dkos, so who knows.

1. Thats the first Ive ever heard about that strawpoll
Then again the last time we had a meaningful senate race was when I was 13 and it was Robb up for reelection. I don't think it means much because even though you see that Bill Frist won the that strawpoll at that conservative club in Tennnesse, I am betting he won't be the nominee. I do think Webb has the advantage, he's got name recongization and he's been in the national media alot, was on the Colbert Report, Hardball, but I dont know if that matters. I'll be voting for Miller in the primary but if Webb wins the primary, I'll vote for him in the general election. I also think if Kos promotes Webb's candiacy, it will hurt Webb, Kos's candidates don't do well generally. I can't stand the guy personally and wish we had a better face for "liberal blogging" than him. I find him arrogant and out of touch.

2. Question for VA Kerrycrats
If Webb is elected the Dem nominee in the primary, will you hold your nose and vote for him? It would at least put another D in the Senate, and might contribute to regaining a Dem majority. It also would get rid of Allen.

FWIW, I'm glad I don't have to make that decision. My main concern this year is getting a Dem into the MA Governor's office. Uncle Teddy is running, but he will easily sail to reelection.

3. Yes, I will
a step forward to a Democratic Congressional Majority is important to me because I want who ever we nominate for president in 2008 to have a Congress he can work with.

4. Miller fans - there are some points being made about Miller
that don't look good. Anyone who supports Miller and knows this stuff might want to go debunk some of the comments.

I don't know enough myself. I found and posted some info about Webb and Kerry, VVAW, and Vietnam generally. There seems to be general recognition that his Vietnam war attitude is a problem for the liberal base.

So anyway I'm pretty much done with it. I just wanted to make sure the Vietnam stuff was known to potential supporters. If they still support Webb anyway, so be it.

5. Your posts were great
Reading Kos on this is weird - It hurts my head that they bashed Kerry for not being the 1971 Kerry for the last 3 years, yet they lavish praise on Webb who hates the 1971 Kerry. They expect people to think Webb was wonderful for going to Vietnam for a few years to bring companies in - likely for great monetary reward, but ignore that it was Kerry more than anyone else who made that possible.

Their conjecture of a Kerry/Webb reconciliation ignores the fact that the hatred only seemed to go one way. Only one of them need say they are sorry - and he is too blinded by needing to assume that the US effort he was involved with was a force for good. If he didn't see the parallels when he found himself against the Iraq war, it's unlikely he ever will.

Straw polls, like intenet polls are susceptible to manipulation. When will they learn Teddy Roosevelt was a Republican?

and not only that, Webb was also bashing Kerry for his role in the normalization of relations with Vietnam.

Note that Webb's current wife is apparently Vietnamese. This is only important in that it suggests his views on Vietnam may be more rigid because of her influence. (Only suggests, though.)

7. Ok the man has done business with Vietnam since normalization, right?
Edited on Sat Mar-18-06 02:01 PM by JohnKleeb
but criticized Kerry for being the leader for normalization there? That doesn't make any sense. I do think its interesting how the liberal bloggers are backing the former Reagan appointee Webb here, then again Jerome Armstrong signed up with Warner's campaign and some call him the Blogfather. I am probably of a minority opinion here but I don't think too highly of Kos and most liberal blogs since I feel they are out of touch with the average citizen. Most Americans still get news the old fashion way, and I also know Kos's track record with endorsing candidates, its 0-17.

8. I think you're correct
and she might well be from the Vietnamese elite that was with the French and then the Americans. I saw that he felt Kerry didn't consider the Vietnamese here - but that really wasn't in his charter. The US did have a President - who takes credit for openning Vietnam.
