3. Yep
I'm a little worried about people calling Kerry's filibuster a stunt, which is why I tried to make sure to differentiate the effort. Kerry never made it all about him or going it alone. He made it about stopping Alito and enlisted other Dems in the effort. I wouldn't have posted this if I hadn't read that about Feingold not even DISCUSSING the censure with other senators. If he'd tried and none of them wanted a part of it, that would have been one thing. But he didn't, so it reeks of grandstanding to me.

5. My comment is that we don't actually know who's on board with
this censure motion, nor do we know who Feingold has spoken to. But, you will have inspired some heavy-duty discussion, which can't be a bad thing on a political board!

8. Feingold said that he had not spoken to anybody before he announced it
on This Week. rawstory also confirmed Kerry was on board but had not received a copy of the resolution, which makes it difficult to endorse it.

15. I know, but that leaves over 24 hours for him to get the word out.
Kerry is on board, but who's to say no one else is?

6. Yeah, you are. Pointing out Feingold's flaws around here is dangerous.

These days, I'd rather insult Dean or Clark. Next you'll be questioning the motives of Russ's Roberts' vote...

7. Commented and recommended
That is a really nice summary. So nice, they're falling back on who voted for the Patriot Act.

10. I saw that
And Murtha. Either of those is relevant how?

It is highly interesting that their hero Feingold had a better Iraq withdrawal plan prior to Murtha, and his plan was ignored in favor of Murtha. As much as DU loves to scream about the "corporate media," they sure are duped by it ALL THE TIME.

12. You're actually getting some support that's not coming from here.
including an interesting one suggesting that this approach which is DOA is less good than anything that gets any investigations. (Kerry's call for an independent Prosecutor is unlikely to fly but at least accomplishes something if it does.

13. I refrained,
however, from posting about this:

There are too many selective mis-characterizations. The IWR drives me crazy. And the Pat Act, which people use for their grandstanding purposes to give the impression that those who voted against it are against all of it. When actually, most Democrats want it amended and they (including the no voters, but not sure about Byrd) will support it when it is. The point is it's fixable.

Statement of Senator Russell D. Feingold
On the Patriot Act Reauthorization Being Signed into Law
March 9, 2006

“Today marks, sadly, a missed opportunity to protect both the national security needs of this country and the rights and freedoms of its citizens. As the President signs this deeply flawed Patriot Act reauthorization into law, I will redouble my efforts to bring back the safeguards that the entire Senate agreed to last summer and enact the further safeguards contained in the bipartisan SAFE Act. This effort is already underway with Senator Specter’s introduction of a bill based on the amendments I was prohibited from offering during Senate debate on the Patriot Act last week. Over the past four years, we have seen a remarkable national grassroots effort to fix the Patriot Act, and I will continue to support that effort as we work to defeat terrorists while also preserving the freedom and liberty that define us as a nation.”

109th CONGRESS

2d Session

S . 2369
To require a more reasonable period for delayed-notice search warrants, to provide enhanced judicial review of FISA orders and national security letters, to require an enhanced factual basis for a FISA order, and to create national security letter sunset provisions.

IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES

March 6, 2006
Mr. SPECTER (for himself, Mr. LEAHY, Ms. MURKOWSKI, Mr. SUNUNU, Mr. FEINGOLD, Mr. CRAIG, Mr. HAGEL, Mr. DURBIN, Mr. SALAZAR, Mrs. FEINSTEIN, Mr. OBAMA, and Mr. KERRY) introduced the following bill; which was read twice and referred to the Committee on the Judiciary

14. I think they got what was possible for now.
Even if they could have held the filibuster together, what would it do? This way the new bill is in place and it's better than the original. When Congress changes then it can be fixed.

and as a result, I have a little less respect for Feingold.

16. A vote tomorrow??
Somebody posted that Frist is supporting a vote tomorrow. Does anyone know if that's true?

That would be a disaster and I really will be pissed at Feingold if that happens. Once there's a vote, before there's any investigation or testimony on "inherent authority", then the whole issue is dead in the water. Because "there was already a vote". This could backfire terribly, in addition to Feingold's questionable handling of it in the first place.

20. Good, thanks
I had a little mini freak-out there when I thought Frist was going to circumvent the whole thing before we ever got it out of the chute.

Politically for the right, he really should, that would end impeachment, investigation, everything. Just vote the censure down and tell America it's all been resolved. Hope they don't think of that.

19. That's what you get for telling the truth
You have elaborated very well the difference between JK's filibuster attempt and Feingold's call for censure. But since when do DUers let a little thing called the truth get in the way of hero worship?
It's almost like a deja vu of the primary wars here, except it's starting rather early. Feingold supporters are developing into the new Deaniacs. It's going to be a long ride, folks.

21. HAHAHHA
saw a post asking why Obama didn't mention this on MTP or whatever show he appeared on. it's because Feingold didn't bring it up to anyone until he appeared on Steph's show. did these people even listen to Feingold who they claim to support ?

i don't see anything wrong with your post WEL. in fact it's mostly good advice for Feingold and others who want to enlist support if they want to get things passed.
