Swift boat veterans leader continues to attack Kerry

FORT WORTH - Vietnam War veterans angry over Sen. John Kerry's protest of the war in the early 1970s met in Fort Worth this weekend to celebrate his loss in the presidential election.

John O'Neill, a former Swift boat commander in Vietnam and co-author of an anti-Kerry Book, Unfit for Command, was a special guest at the gathering Saturday night at Billy Bob's Texas of about 100 veterans from throughout the United States.

Introduced as "the man who torpedoed John F. Kerry's candidacy," O'Neill said that his group, Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, raised $28 million to help defeat the Democrat.

"How could you ever elect to the presidency of the United States a man who claimed we were involved in all of those atrocities?" O'Neill said. "How could you let a guy like that be in control of our children's future?"

Criticism of Kerry's war honors as a Swift boat commander in Vietnam, and of his anti-war statements in 1971 after he returned to this country, is believed to have helped derail his challenge against President Bush.

Larry Bailey, founder and president of a group calling itself Vietnam Vets for the Truth, said his group joined with O'Neill's organization in lambasting Kerry's criticism of the Vietnam War and in questioning whether Kerry should have received honors for his military service in the conflict.

"We never mentioned once the name George W. Bush," he said.

State Rep. Lon Burnam, a Fort Worth Democrat, said he was surprised that former Vietnam War soldiers would toast Bush's victory, noting that the president, a Texas Air National Guard veteran, never served in Vietnam.

"It's a little ironic they're celebrating Kerry's defeat at the polls," Burnam said. "The only Vietnam War veteran in the race was John Kerry."

1. Remember, this is all they have

I saw that. I also saw and posted that they are having an unofficial, official inaugural event this week. I hope they laugh it up, I hope they laugh it up good.

There is a kid in my town who got a leg blown off in Iraq and while he kept his arm, it isn't really useful. I wonder if these guys would laugh at him or question his patriotism. I wonder if they would have the nerve to go by his Mom in the supermarket with a little purple heart bandage on their dumb f*ck heads. My father suffered in his war at Tarawa and was injured and collected a small pension from the government for the rest of life for this. I would like to see one of these assholes question the patriotism of people like this who actually showed up for service when I'm around.

I despise the Chickenhawks in Washington like Cheney, Bush and all the others who pimped for war and to send other people's kids to suffer and possibly die. They never went. They were too busy getting high and having a good time on Daddy's dime. There is a special place in hell where the fires are always kept stoked extra hot for people who piss on the good name and decent reputations of others. I know who's going there someday, don't you. So laugh it up, bastards, you are going to get yours.

(Sorry, but this is my absolute hot button issue.)

5. Reminds me of a moral I learned at Synagogue...

One day a Rabbi was so frustrated with the gang of neighborhood toughs that he prayed to God for their deaths. His wife reminded him that it is wrong to pray for the deaths of your foes, but to pray that they turn from their ways and accept righteousness, for this is what God desires also.

On the other hand, when you've been a professional John Kerry heckler for your whole life, I guess you can't just retire. Rather than hope they drop dead, though, I hope they just somehow get discredited and mocked. I know it's not a facet of Judaism, but Karma's a bitch. Hopefully they will be laughed out of the political arena like the deserve to be when Kerry makes a gallant return in the 2008 campaign.

9. Help me spiritually, rockymountain dem!

I have trouble forgiving G.W. Bush, Zell Miller, and O'Neill and his ilk. I realize forgiveness does NOT preclude punishment or demands for justice, but still...

Last night at Mass, dear Father Hurley (a Massachusetts man, no less) got up and talked about unity, including in the aftermath of the election. It was not a partisan speech, nor did it attempt to ignore the real differences between us, but still I wanted to cry out that Bush chose division.

And division was what O'Neill and his ilk chose.

So what should I pray for? That they all repent?

And it just kills me that McCarthy and Nixon and Atwater seem to have power beyond the grave, for the current GOP leadership embraces and celebrates that shameful legacy. At least Atwater died repentant (I can't say the same for the other two). And here our good people, such as Paul and Sheila Wellstone, are cut down. When do we get justice? And how to we handle things spiritually for the duration?

I remember Jimmy Carter saying that Rosalynn was bitter enough for both of them after his 1980 defeat. I'm bitter enough for the entire East Coast, for crying out loud.

10. Well, I would say that your forgiveness of them isn't what's important.

Spiritually speaking, it doesn't matter whether or not *you* forgive them. Judaism was never big on forgiveness, the focus is instead on justice. What is important is that you try and find ways to get them to abandon their evil.

In relation to the original post, what these guys are doing isn't really a crime or a sin, but it's quite mean-spirited and isn't being done (I think) because they are still mad about the 70s, but because they are modern image smearers. On the other hand, spreading malicious gossip is a serious sin in Judaism, so perhaps it is a sin.

I guess the best answer I can come up with is that it's not important for you to forgive them. I don't think the Rabbi in the parable I related forgave the hoodlums, but just hoped for a different, more productive outcome. Think about it... we could just wish the Swiftvets away, or we could uncover their lies, expose them, and not only discredit the Swiftvets but a central arm of the Republican political machine (namely character assassination and mudslinging). This could not be accomplished if we simply snapped our fingers and made them disappear. The public would just say "I wonder where they went" and move on.
