Kerry To Deliver UU Peace Lecture

US Senator John Kerry, the Democratic Party candidate at the most recent US Presidential elections, is to visit Northern Ireland later this week to deliver a lecture at the University of Ulster’s Magee campus.

The invitation-only event, which forms part of the Tip O’Neill series of peace lectures, will be on the topic of “ Security in the 21st Century”, and takes place on Sunday 29 January at 7.30pm.

Senator Kerry visits at the invitation of Professor John Hume, holder of the Tip O’Neill Chair in Peace Studies at the University.

The Tip O’ Neill Chair, funded by the Ireland Funds, commemorates the former Speaker of the US House of Representatives, who was well known for his support of the peace process in Northern Ireland.

Among others to have delivered lectures in the series are former US President Bill Clinton, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern , President of the European Commission Romano Prodi, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, and former Taoiseach Garret FitzGerald

1. Excellent!
They know what a lot of people know about him. The rest are in denial.

16. I sent him an e-mail.
He sent me one today to remind me of the Alito vote tomorrow, so it was only proper for me to reply with a request for them to cover Sen Kerry in Ireland.
I did offer to carry their cameras. I don't know if it will help, but never hurts to ask.
Actually, I think he just wanted to talk about the Steelers today. Oh, well. He should know by now to expect a followup "Can you cover Kerry?" request.

3. See, the Irish love him!
They recognize an Irish-by-assocation person when they see one. LOL!

blm: I don't know if they can get a camera there. I imagine it would actually have to be a feed that originates in Ireland and that C-Span just contracts to take. I will look up the organization and then write to c-span about this.

13. Are you kidding?
They name streets after him!

Seriously, I was there before the election and after. They do like the Senator, they HATE bush*, and they think Clinton's a saint.

17. What a great sign - either way you turn, you can't go wrong!
I was there when Bush I was in the White House. They hated him too. (Probably not as much as Bush II though.)

19. Do I have pics? Is John Kerry the hottest senator on the planet?
I have tons of photos. I'll post some on Neptune later today if I get a chance. I shot mostly slides on the trip (it was just what I was shooting back in the day) so there are a lot I can't post at the moment (still need to convert them to CD) but I do have some prints I can post.

That's a beautiful shot by the way. I miss it too!

5. That's our President!!!
This is impressive and look at that list of speakers. He's in the company of giants there, that's for sure. I'm really pleased to see him taking this role because lord knows we need somebody around the world to offset Bush's bumbling excuse for a president.

10. Damn, my invite got lost in mail, again!
LOL! (Okay actually ROTFLMAO!)

Seriously, the visitors know where to go to get serious and talk with the grown-ups. This is great. (Lefty Lizzie, just in case you happen to be near there on your legitimate and perfectly normal GU college business, maybe you could notice for us if there is extra activity that night. If you happen to be in the area.)

15. It's interesting to think that dinners like
this would likely have been the rule with President Kerry and first lady Teresa. This does sound interesting - I wonder if the Republicans are people like Lugar and Hagel.

8. That is so cool.
Since it's a lecture series, maybe there will be a podcast or something? We'll have to see what we can find.

11. I'm so glad he's going to speak there!
As I've mentioned before, once upon a time, when I was young and stoopid I was a Republican. My conversion to the Democratic Party came about in large part because of fascination with Northern Ireland. (It's a long story, I won't bore anyone with the details.) Anyway, I spent two weeks there in 1989 (when The Troubles were still raging) and it's a fascinating place. I hope JK has a chance to travel about a bit while he's over there. Damn, I love President Kerry!

20. I'm glad to hear JK sided with including Sinn Féin
"His February 2004 statement called on the IRA and loyalists to disarm but he also angered the Rev Ian Paisley’s Democratic Unionists by insisting they should not be allowed to disenfranchise half the population of the North by refusing to form a government with Sinn Féin."

I missed this somehow, but I'm glad to hear it. He's right on about Northern Ireland.
