From cancer surgery. He was very thin and even sick looking then.

Now he's robust, healthier than ever, and HOT HOT HOT!

I think as, Dynamic Dems points out, it was probably that he felt that he may have simply felt that Senators need some dignity. In the pictures of him as Lt Gov and a young Senator, he is very thin but he's always been athletic. I would vote modesty and dignity over any concern that he viewed himself as unattractively thin.
