ROAD TO THE WHITE HOUSE 2008
Kerry in NH & Daschle in Iowa
This Sunday night Road to the White House includes Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) in New Hampshire at a rally for Manchester Mayor Bob Baines. Mayor Baines lost his bid for re-election when Manchester voters went to the polls on Nov. 8. The program continues with Fmr. Sen. OMG! Ahm, oh dear. I would have worn something flattering not that sweatshirt that made ne look like and overgrown blueberry. Oh dear! I will distract Mr. TayTay tonight and hope he doesn't watch this.

That said, it was a great, great stump speech.

Oh and vis a vis the remarks on religion, read this: http://www.boston.com/news/globe/ideas/articles/2005/11/13/test_of_faith/

Nice pic too!

I am not actually a blueberry. Honest. I just have very bad fashion sense. Oh dear! (I hate having my picture taken. I hope I'm not in this.)

She did not look like a blueberry, so if that was you, fess up.
Did you watch it? Were you in any shots?
Come on, Tay Tay...
I'm so curious.

Sen Kerry was great. I was wrong about the religious references. I had thought he was going too far with them, but it sounded just fine.

He really seemed to connect with the people in the room.

I will have to write to thank C Span tomorrow.

I had no ideer this was being televised. I'm in shock. (I would have been in the back. I'm not a TV person. I'm not shy, just camera shy.)

It was a great speech. I haven't seen it yet on C-Span. I'm afraid to look. Mr Kerry looked great that day though. He was loose and funny and clearly among friends. I only heard some of the stuff people asked him. I did spend a lot of time observing the kids who were strongly observing John Kerry. That was just awesome. The kids kept looking over at the tall guy to figure out why he was so celebrated. Mr. Kerry was, I think, deeply amused by this. I think he just likes kids and finds them awesome to be around. Kids usually have no trouble being themselves and that is just always amusing and interesting.

Did they show the little kid in front with the sign? Did they show him looking up at John Kerry backward, almost touching his head back to the kid behind him. This was so damn cute, I stopped listening to the Mayor when he was speaking. The little kid just wanted a good look and to figure out who this tall guy was. LOL! & LOL! again.

Ahm, I have to get over my shock at being on TV. Oh dear. I don't want to self-identify on a public board. PM and I'll tell you which was which. (Freepers you know.)

Oh wait a minute, no they don't! That was great. I enjoyed his speech, but I really liked the part afterward when he was talking to the crowd. I wish I could hear what some of the people were saying to him better though. He asked a group of students something like what are the issues people are concerned about (and later said, it's a shame, it's a shame) but I couldn't hear exactly what they were talking about.

You can tell he really listens to what people have to say, and really wants to make things better. He really does need to loosen up though, he's too damn aloof.

I thought his manner was pretty 'Sunday morning televangelist'. I couldn't really get past that to listen to much of what he was saying.
Is that normal for him? I never paid much attention.
I will listen again at the replay and see if my opinion changes. Maybe it was the contrast with Sen Kerry. I realize they were different events, but still, Daschle's speaking style seemed really preachy to me.

TayTay and I were standing about 2 people back from the folks seated at the front. I do have long, red hair and was wearing a green turtlenect and a green shirt.

Should be interesting to see JK again, but I'm usually the one who runs away if there is a camera around.

how many people in NH Sen. Kerry knows. He really has spent a lot of time in the State of New Hampshire. He was pretty specific in his list of reasons why Baines whould have been re-elected. (And I just love those campaign rallies. Just love them. Any time I can go somewhere and cheer on "Our great Democratic candidates" I just love it.) I wish they had shown the kids more. (And Sen. Kerry is a wicked hand-talker. How could the Boston Globe say he isn't really from Massachusetts when he talks with his hands so emphatically? That is a signature thing for people around here. Those constant hands in motion.)

Oh, they didn't show that moment when he picked up the kid onstage. That was so sweet. Damn, I liked that part.

Edited on Sun Nov-13-05 10:43 PM by TayTay
That was a happy guy. He was genuinely happy to be there and was freely interacting with the crowd. He was giving out hugs like candy. Those were nice, warm 'Hey, how are you doing, it's so good to see ya' hugs. I don't know, but it was nice to just stand back and see it too. (Even if it wasn't my party.) There was an 'homecoming weekend' feel to the whole thing.

I never believed the stupid 'reserved, stiff and aloof' stuff. I never believed it in Mass and I sure as hell never believed it last year. But it is still interesting to see just how good a pol he really is and how nicely he interacts with a crowd. That's genuine.

I think he should go to New Hampshire more often. This was one of my favorite local appearances. (Topped only by the singing and poetry recitals at the St. Pat's Day breakfast. I like it when he reads his poetry and sings with the crowd. I just do. Those things are funny and oh so human. Next year's breakfast should be a humdinger. I hope he sings or writes a poem for it. I will make DVDs of it for people here, if it is any good.)

Wow! He must have a great singing voice. Tell me! Tell me!

John Kerry is around here quite a bit because he has friends in the area. You saw how many of the people knew him very well. He has a following in the Manchester area. When he appeared in Manchester on Halloween '04, it was the largest outdoor rally in NH history. Baines helped set that up for Senator Kerry and it likely tipped the scales just enough to give Kerry a win in NH. If John Kerry does run in 2008, it will hurt not having the support of Manchester's mayor. Baines might run for Congress, I hear.

to make everything flow as if in real time, when they did do a bit of cutting. Senator Kerry posed with kids a lot more than they showed.

You know, after the rally, I mentioned to my daughter that I thought it was odd that the Senator was wearing makeup to speak to such a small crowd. Now it makes sense and so do those horribly hot lights. CAMERAS! ACK!

Yeah, I saw myself, and if I didn't know my own clothing, I'd have guessed that Miss Piggy crashed the rally.

Okay, we have a courtesy two-hour window of being negative about seeing ourselves on TV, then it's over. We just have to learn to live with it.

I think I am the most dorky person on the planet. I didn't notice the makeup. I was too busy looking at the people, the kids, the campaign signs. I just didn't register the makeup. I'm going to go put my head in an overn now. There is no hope for me. (I did think he looked very fit. Duh!)

51. I don't remember that!
I do remember being tired of carrying my Red Sox jacket and putting it down so I could applaud more. Story of my life, just when someone looks at me, I fade and have to put something down. Sigh! It was unintentional. I had too much stuff in my hands. (I'm sorry.)

I don't think I ever got within two rows of people close to the Senator. That might have been someone else. (I was close to him, but not within touching range. That might have been someone else.)

We were wicked close up though. (na na na na na!) I was also wicked close up the weekend before with Whome in Roxbury. (Yeah, I saw him twice in 7 days. So, how was your week. TayTay -> be-yatch.) Maybe Sen. Kerry remembered that crazy woman in Roxbury who couldn't get a clear camera angle to save her life and said to himself, What's she doing here? Still trying to get a damn decent camera angle so I could report back to yuhz!

I turned down an occassion to meet with Sen. Kerry last Sunday as part of the grassroots drive in Mass (to get rid of Mittens.) I couldn't do Boston at that time. Geez, remind me of that the next time I whine and whine about not seeing the Sen. in Mass. (Can't whine anymoe about that, I guess. I have to behave myself now.)

Dynamicdems was holding paper, and TayTay was looking in her purse - for a pen??? Kerry was giving autographs right then (our rock star)

You two are famous! I made my daughter watch. See those two, they are people I talk to on DU! lol

We should have buttons made (label pins?) that say
KERRYCRAT, and it should be something we were when going to see him.

58. The buttons are something I can make for us.
Edited on Mon Nov-14-05 12:04 AM by _dynamicdems
I have an online store and have some Kerry stuff. If anyone wants any buttons, shirts etc. made let me know and I'll send you a link to purchase at my cost. (No charging fellow KerryCrats.) Mostly I keep the Kerry stuff there because it brings his name up in searches. I'd be happy to make custom items for the group too. Just don't buy from the store without contacting me first because you will get charged retail.

BTW, I'd love to add a section of Kerrycrat stuff to my store, but I didn't want to steal the name. If nobody objects, I'd love to do up some Kerrycrat stuff. Input on the design would be great. It could be sold to public or just kept for us only.

Feedback appreciated.

59. What was that button that someone was wearing
when he was shaking hands and hugging everyone (toward the end, right before he left). I think it said "I Wish John Kerry Was My President." He saw it and asked her about it and said how much he liked it. I wish the lady wearing it had said where she got it from.

68. Here are a few buttons...
that I set up at a "hidden" link just for Kerry Groupers. Button prices are set at my cost of $1.25. They can be purchased in lots of 10, but I haven't gotten around to setting this up. If anyone is interested, I can make up special buttons or t-shirts to commemorate the JK Birthday Bash in Boston.

Here are the designs. They are on buttons right now, but I can put them on anything else:

"John Kerry is My President"
"I Wish John Kerry Was My President"
"KERRYCRAT"

49. It is funny about the makeup.
After the rally, I went over my daughters house and I mentioned the makeup to her. She said it was probably just sunless tanning lotion. "No," I told her, "It was makeup."

LOL! But he looked GREAT on television.

Maybe this was a good thing out of a bad thing. Miss Piggy is going on a diet.

Your sweatshirt did look very blue. That is not a bad thing though. Democrat Blue. It could be worse: you could have been me.

52. Our two-hour flipping out time is now over.
We can't complain aobut it anymore. (I just wish I had known this was going to be on C-span. I would not have worn my jokey election day shirt. That's all.)

Geez, DD, you looked fine. I thought you were without problems. Funny how self-critical people are when they find out they are on TV and had no ideer that was going to happen. (Honest to gawd, I didn't know they were taping for C-Span. I thought it was WMUR or something.)

60. Okay, I watched him mingle with the crowd and here are some thoughts
First off, I am still getting to know Kerry unlike many of you who have seen him or even talked to him in person before. So here are some observations:

1. He really listens to everyone, and is interested in what they have to say. That is why I would describe him as "in touch with the American people". He knows that the moment he stops listening to us ordinary folks that it's time to hang up his politician's coat and retire. Half of the Republican party should do just that (maybe somebody needs to watch a Republican event like this and eavesdrop on what they're saying -- I have a feeling they might be complaining about the same stuff -- health care and Iraq).

2. He's very nice, polite, gracious, and curious with the people he doesn't know, but is downright affectionate with the people he does know. That's an important distinction, because it goes along with the fact that he's no "phony". He's not going to be out of control "hi -- how ARE you" with someone he doesn't know. He struck me as very genuine. At the end he saw someone named "Sylvia", and, I tell you, I would feel so good if someone greeted me with such obvious fondness.

3. He is very interested in how policy impacts people's lives at the micro level. At the end, when he really needed to leave, he started chatting with an older woman on his left (who he knew). I put my headphones on to hear what she had to say and she sounded like my Mom, talking about how it's tough for Medicare patients to find a doctor, dentist, or eye doctor since the government is not very good at reimbursing doctors. Kerry was listening intently and clearly looked pained by her predicament. And then he asked her a question.

4. I'm just curious if all these naysayers on the liberal blogosphere are willing to just show up to one of these events, look him in the eye, and say one of their mantras (you know, like you said you would let every vote count and you caved or. You blew it now let someone else run. Or there is no way I will vote for you in a primary. Or my personal favorite: you made a Skull and Bones pact with * to THROW the election, you traitor). Because it was so nice to see people in person urging him to run.

5. Iraq clearly pains him. He said "they've dug themselves a hole, and it's only getting deeper". He wrote and gave that speech in Georgetown on Iraq because he HEARS what the people say and heartily agrees. But he took a step further to come up with a plan to extricate ourselves from Iraq, but with honor. * puts down people who pay attention to polls. But you know what. It's OUR country, and the POTUS is working for us, not the other way around. Kerry is a great leader because he acknowledges the problems and comes up with solutions.

6. He doesn't make it a practice to feel sorry for himself. Someone said to him "I am so sorry" about his loss last year and he answered "we're going to keep fighting". Sort of like, let's move forward and not focus on past loss. Let's learn lessons, and don't look back.

Wow, that was a lot of meat simply by eavesdropping on conversations he's having with the Democratic faithful. Can everyone corroborate that he is like this even when the cameras AREN'T turned on? Because if that's so, I'm really impressed.

61. well it's the same guy I saw in the rope lines, two different times
He was the same--and the cameras weren't on. The same looking, listening, thoughtful person who treated each person as important, and stayed long after to make sure everybody got attention who wanted it. He was charismatic, magnetic, gentlemanly, caring, real, and not to forget upbeat--he always seems to be upbeat--probably hardwired into his personality. :)

62. I had similar reactions.
I've only seen him at huge events, and I was so impressed that he was willing to really get into policy discussions with people when he was chatting casually. He didn't brush off anyone's questions. A couple of people also got really emotional when meeting him, which I thought was telling.

63. You are so right.
He does listen and he genuinely cares. Senator Kerry takes the word "service" literally. He serves the people he represents. During the campaign, Senator Kerry made promises to people all across this country, which has broadened his constituency beyond the scope of Massachusetts alone. This is why so many of us call him our "Shadow President."

"Can everyone corroborate that he is like this even when the cameras AREN'T turned on? Because if that's so, I'm really impressed."

Everything I've ever read about him corroborates that he is indeed like this and so is his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry. They are simply good people who have compassion and a desire to leave the world a little better than they found it. Look up some of the stories told by people who have known John kerry for years. Some of them are extremely touching.

While the man is very intellectual and serious about his work, he is also very compassionate, and not in the least cold or aloof (as he is portrayed in the media). Senator Kerry is very mannered and respectful and that is something people are not used to in this day and age. He's not stuffy in the least, but he is a gentleman and has the kind of manners that are based in respect. Maybe this comes from early exposure to other cultures and to the concept of diplomacy.

There is a story that an acquaintance of my step-mother told her about Teresa Heinz Kerry in New Hampshire. The story has changed hands several times, so the details may have been altered somewhat in the telling. Several years ago this individual recognized Mrs. Kerry (somewhere in NH, but I don't know where or under what circumstances) and spoke with her about her charity work and how he admired the things she has done. He explained that he does something similar, but on a smaller scale, with animal shelters. In the course of the conversation, he mentioned that it was difficult to get donations for all the shelters. He didn't ask for anything, but several months later a full truckload of supplies was delivered to his organization. There was a small note attached from THK saying, "I hope this helps." The guy told my step-mother that as far as he is concerned, nobody better say anything against this lady in front of him. There was no publicity involved. I have no way of verifying this story, but I believe it. It seems in character with the type of people the Kerrys are.

65. That's a great story.
Something similar happened last year when there was a major flood in Pittsburgh last year during the campaign. The media took THK to task for not doing anything to help flood victims, when actually she visited with hundreds of families and provided all these supplies without bringing any cameras or reporters or anything. The only way her involvement was publicized was that a number of regular people who actually talked to her wrote into their local papers in response to the negative editorials that had been written about her. It was really inspiring.

66. Ahm, well, there are two ways to look at this.
I think a lot of people here know that the Boston Globe has not been exactly in Senator Kerry's corner all the time. (Long story, not today.) One of the Senator's most consistent critics in Boston called him, "an unusually accessible pol."

In the Globe this has sometimes been written as a negative. It's nice to see the coin flipped and it used as the positive it is. They wrote it as Senator Kerry being unwilling to surrender the argument and trying to convince the last soul possible of the rightness of his position. (Again, what you guys wrote is the same thing, just written differently.)

I find a lot of people who got into a good conversation with the Senator. He is a gregarious guy. That's what makes him a good pol. (Well, plus that unbelievable tenacity. That's just part of his character, that 'wear 'em down till they give in' side of the coin. There is an strong, strong element of 'never give up' there.)

69. His interaction with the crowd after the speech
actually kind of reminded me of some footage I've seen in the past of Bill Clinton interacting with crowds. (And regardless of what anyone might think of Clinton's policies, I think we can all agree he's a people person.) They both seem very interested in and concerned about what the people have to say. They both appear to be TRULY listening and thinking about what they are being asked or told. With a lot of politicians in that same situation, it appears like they feel that it's a privilege for the CROWD to get to touch them and talk to them. JK and BC seem to think that it's a privilege for THEM to interact with the crowd.

70. That's EXACTLY what I was thinking, Island Blue!
I'll never forget when after Clinton became president, he went to the "forgotten" part of DC and stood and shook hands and talked with the people there in the neighborhood. I guess some people can say "oh that's just style over substance", but I strongly disagree. I think the people there probably still talk about the day the POTUS came and talked and shook hands with them.

Once again, excuse my ignorance as a relative newbie, but I had NO idea how well Kerry interacts with crowds. I am ashamed to say I bought the "aloof" label during the campaign. That has now been 100% obliterated.

72. It's up at the C-Span site.
I think you can enter the Road to the White House or just Kerry as a video search term and then see it.

IT's great on the little tiny scren. In fact, that's my preferred viewing method.
