Kerry new statement on Katrina - collective anguish and frustration
Edited on Fri Sep-02-05 05:54 PM by Mass
over the inadequate response of the federal government over these past several days.

This is probably be seen as underwhelming on DU, but this is what a president should say.

http://www.johnkerry.com/pressroom/releases/pr_2005_09_02.html

“We cannot and must not give up on the people left stranded and destitute by this storm. This is a national tragedy and it demands a national response. At home in Massachusetts, citizens and corporations are donating time, money and their expertise to help out and I know the same thing is happening in every state in the country.

“Now is the time for all of us to come together to help our fellow Americans rebuild the communities that have lost so much.

“Elected officials, emergency personnel and incredible volunteers are working round the clock. These emergency workers are heroes.

“While Americans are united and determined to help the people who are suffering, there is no question that we share a collective anguish and frustration over the inadequate response of the federal government over these past several days. Federal officials must act swiftly in coming hours and days to direct more aid to the region as rapidly as possible.

“Last night the Senate allocated $10.5 billion to help fund immediate relief efforts. Although that is a welcome first step, I plan to work in coming days to find more ways that we can help joining with my colleagues in the Senate to support those who have lost so much and those working so hard to help them.

1. You should post it in GD, Mass
I think it's an excellent statement. Some in GD are going to bash him regardless of what he says. Fuck them.
This statement is angry enough to make the point. Anything more is just counterproductive right now. The finger pointing can start once the people are safe.

8. Ironically,
the things he says and does indicate what an excellent president he would be. A president of all the people. It's that very concern that infuriates the GD pinheads. They want someone who's full of rage.

Fortunately, they can each only vote once. And they are completely unpersuasive.

11. Could you imagine having to convince people they want
to have someone as President who they regularly see filled with rage? As you say, Kerry's words and actions show the type of President he would be. One problem is that rage is often felt when you are powerless and have no voice- so it not only is distinctly non-Presidential, but a sign of weakness.

2. That's Kerry the Statesman responding. Wanna see what Frist said?
Bill Frist refuses to take the 'Estate Tax' repeal off the agenda for Tuesday. He is sending it to the Senate Finance Committee. Sen. Frist is seriously suggesting that at this point in American history what the people need most is to remove $1.5 billion dollars a week in revenue from the federal stream and increase the taxes on the poor and the middle-class. I am not making this up.

Sen. Kerry is a member of the Senate Finance Committee. I am sure that the Rethugs planned for the repeal of the Estate Tax when it looked like the Roberts hearings were going to suck all the media oxyen out of the room and their brazen tax cut for the uber-rich would just sail through without notice. Things change. I would pay good money to see Senator Kerry speak in committee on this one. Real good money.

I applaud Sen. Kerry's remarks. I applaud whoever wrote that press release and the way they managed to conceal the obvious rage that is in that statement. I'm telling you people, the wrath of Gawd is going to descend on the Rethugs. They are in for a slice of hell.

5. There should be some fireworks at that show!
At his press conference in LA this afternoon Shrub kept saying people should "send cash". Such sage advice. A.) Most of us have either already done that and/or plan to donate more and B.) Most of us also donate by paying our fair share of taxes! I GLADLY pay taxes to the government for this very reason! To go through with plans for something like repealing the Estate Tax at a time like this is beyond words.

Man, all of this Republican kindling is going to make the fires of Hell burn exceptionally hot and bright!

4. OMG Fucking Santorum
He changed the statement on his web page.

This morning, it started by commending the administration for it's response. Now, that part's gone. I wish I had taken a screen shot.

What a jackass.

10. Nice - our senators are taking care of us.

(Gas was up 20 cents since yesterday where I live and their average price is our low price)- when will it begin to be price gouging, though I imagine we are better off than in GA).

http://business.bostonherald.com/businessNews/view.bg?articleid=100838

Romney and Reilly appeared at a State House press conference in a display of cooperation on monitoring pump prices and cracking down on any gas gouging - either at the wholesale or retail level.
``I equate it to looting,'' said Romney of anyone charging exorbitant prices amid the tragic fallout from Hurricane Katrina.
Reilly, a Democrat eyeing a run for governor, said he's working with 20 other attorneys general across the nation to monitor possible price gouging.
Meanwhile, members of the Massachusetts congressional delegation - including Sens. Edward Kennedy and John Kerry - sent a letter urging Romney to take tough action against price gougers and to explore declaring an energy emergency that would give him more power to crack down.
But both Romney and Reilly said there is no shortage of gasoline that would require an emergency declaration - just supply distributions. Under current market conditions, no cases of gouging have been found yet, Reilly said.

12. And check out the front page of Teddy's web site
He must have ben hearing it from every Dem in Massachusetts. Wow! Nice stuff. I think Uncle Ted is priming for bear down in DC. And Big John is coming alone too, with his own wealth of righteous anger.

We are well served indeed.
