Carl Cameron gets in digs at Clinton, Kerry during papal update
They watch Fox so you don't have to: http://www.newshounds.us/2005/04/07/carl_cameron_gets_in_digs_at_clinton_kerry_during_papal_update.php

Carl Cameron reported from Rome today 4/7/05 on Special Report with Brit Hume. Here are a few tidbits from the otherwise ho-hum report:

BH: "The flood of visitors to Rome for the funeral of Pope John Paul II has surpassed even the most enormous annual Muslim pilgrimmage to Mecca."

Comment: What is the point of injecting this "competitive" comparison?

CCC: "For his part, president Bush stayed largely out of sight so as not to overshadow the pope's funeral and legacy with politics of the day."

Comment: Overshadow? What hubris. Spun the other way, Bush stayed out of sight so there would not be the unseemly sound of booing at the Pope's funeral.

BH invited CC to comment on John Kerry's appearance on crutches, attributed to arthroscopic knee surgery, and on Bill Clinton's "comments apparently on the way over, it's been considerable talk about it today in this country on talk radio in particular..." Cameron could not stop the big grin that appeared on his face momentarily.
Basically Clinton "raised some eyebrows when he said the Pope might have had a mixed legacy." Clinton said the number of Catholics increased during the Pope's tenure (well of course it did; they're against birth control!) but the number of priests dropped. Turns out the number of priests in the USA dropped but not worldwide. As for Kerry's knee, Cameron couldn't resist the dig "not withstanding all that windsurfing, activitiy, athleticism during the campaign,..."

Comment: Talk radio is desperate if they're turning that statement into a big deal. And Carl seems to be implying Kerry's athleticism was part of his campaign packaging, unlike, say, Bush's good-old-boy brush-clearin' pick-up drivin' jet-landin' folksiness.

1. Campaign Carl is an idiot
His wife works for the Rethugs and he is a jerk. Clinton made an innocuous remark that was humble and wise about he and other one-time world leaders leaving behind a mixed legacy. (Well, yeah, that's true.) And Kerry has been physically active all his life. He had some minor day-surgery to correct the knees. (It is my understanding that this is very common surgery. I know 8 people who have had it. It turned out okay.)

Fox is brain-dead and reaching. Must be that impulse to talk about anyone but Delay and Cornyn and the other loser Rethugs.

2. My brain gets so numbed out by

the daily idiocies dished out by Fox and their puppet-masters, that I need to occasionally take a look at what they are actually saying to remind myself that no matter how bad I think they are, they are actually even worse.

This is standard fare for Fox, but disgusting. What I wonder is whether Joe Sixpack is starting to recognize it for what it is. I wish someone would do some kind of poll on that subject. Though I did notice this:

The new poll found the largest drop for Bush came among men, self-described conservatives and churchgoers.

Hah!

3. Looked at another way, Kerry is a fast learner
if he learned to wind surf, snow board, play hockey, ski,hit a soccer ball with his head, and ride a bike without falling off just to impress people for his campaign. But he didn't fool FOX. (Pretty clever photoshopping his picture into the Yale and St Paul teams. But he didn't make the cheerleader team like Bush.)

4. Carl Cameron is the one who did the Kerry as metrosexual reporting
he reported about Kerry getting manicures and expensive hairstyles and other gossipy type crap.

8. Bush actually was booed.
When his face appeared on the video screen, people booed and whistled! See today's DU home page for the article.

10. Fox
I don't get cable, so I don't watch any of the cable news networks like Fox, CNN, MSNBC, etc. I haven't really watched Fox at all for about 8 years or so, but recently, when I was in Thailand, one of the places we stayed had Fox on the TV. There was only one other English language station (BBC), along with several Thai ones, German, Italian,
French and Hindi - so I ended up watching Fox a bit...

My God!

There's just absolutely no pretense of fairness at all! Call me naive, but I was kind of shocked. Especially in the context of watching the other foreign stations - even the style is different. All the people on Fox seemed always angry and arguing. But the content - so blatantly right wing. Their average discussion panel is three right wing nutjobs and a moderate Conservative... I mean... Randall Terry presented as some kind of legitimate pundit?

The most amazing thing about Fox to me is that not only don't they represent mainstream America, they don't even represent mainstream Conservatism.

If we had a real FCC, they would have their license pulled.
