2. Good speech. I was glad he started...
...by empathizing with those of us who are angry about this. I can tell that he understands the anger. It's not just that we who have been responsible and 'played by the rules' now have to pay for the mistakes of others. For me, it's also that their irresponsibility (Bush ideology, SEC lack of oversight, greed on Wall Street, banking and real estate) has risked our country's future.

I feel like I did when the 'Bush Doctrine' of pre-emptive war was announced. Like I did when torture came to light. Those actions...like this one...are NOT the America I believe we should be.

P.S. Okay, now I'm really happy...Barbara Boxer just talked BLAME. She equated this with Enron. YAaaay! :)

4. Dubin also spoke with anger that we are in this situation
which didn't have to happen. (I missed JK)

Durbin referred to an amendment he sponsored in 2001 that sought to prohibit predatory lending - which he said could have prevented the abuses. Here is the Thomas info on the motion to table (Nay = the good vote) - this is good to counter the McCain people saying he tried to regulate. (I also see my corrupt former Senator on the bad list - Torricelli )

5. Yes, I heard Senator Durbin...
...speak. I was glad about what he said. But after the legislation is passed...there MUST be a discussion of how this happen, what the failings were, and more legislation to prevent a repeat.

This is JUST like Enron. People have broken the law.

The nay votes match no pattern. Most interesting nay vote was Tester.

11. Like Obama said,
When the house is on fire, first you put the fire out. Then you find out who was smoking in bed and started the whole thing.

I'm really glad the Senate acted on this asap. And now I think the House will be ready to get on board too. I heard that after the stock market dove on Monday people's emails to Congress started being more positive toward the legislation.

12. I'm glad they acted, too. It puts the pressure...
...on the House to follow through, and hopefully, they will. And Obama is exactly right on this...it's a good analogy...let's get that fire out! :)

10. Hey Fedup, thou C-SPAN watcher, did you see this?
Via TPM:

Let the record reflect that Barack Obama made the approach to John McCain tonight.
As the two shared the Senate floor tonight for the first time since they won their party nominations, Obama stood chatting with Democrats on his side of the aisle, and McCain stood on the Republican side of the aisle.

So Obama crossed over into enemy territory.

He walked over to where McCain was chatting with Republican Sen. Mel Martinez of Florida and Independent Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut. And he stretched out his arm and offered his hand to McCain.

McCain shook it, but with a "go away" look that no one could miss. He tried his best not to even look at Obama.

Finally, with a tight smile, McCain managed a greeting: "Good to see you."

Obama got the message. He shook hands with Martinez and Lieberman -- both of whom greeted him more warmly -- and quickly beat a retreat back to the Democratic side.

DAMN, what a poor sport.

13. Good for Senator Obama...
...he did exactly what I would expect from a future President of the United States. Too bad the other guy has no class.

I also saw him talking top Hillary Clinton for quite a while on the Senate floor. ;)
