My son William turns 18 today. Yesterday, he registered to vote for the first time
(while getting an ID card).

This week-end will be celebration. Difficult to believe 18 years have passed.

4. Happy Birthday to William!
My daughter Julie will turn 18 in three months and got her provisional drivers license yesterday ("conduite accompagnée" - normal driving age is still 18). It's the same feeling for my parents and me. We just can't believe so many years have passed so fast. And soon she will definitely be gone. *sigh* (Julie will have her baccalaureat exams in early June and will start university in the UK in September.)

Will William be able to vote in France as well? To her chagrin Julie can't because she was born in Germany and only has the German citizenship. I think it's totally inappropriate in this globalized world that Germany still doesn't allow a second citizenship.

5. He will be able to vote in France as well, but unfortunately, not until next year.

(He really wanted to vote next week, but he had to turn 18 before the end of 2006).

Good luck to your daughter for her bac! William still has to do his senior year. He repeated one year when he went from the French system to the American system. After that, he is thinking of going to a French university or spend one year in China. (too far for my taste).

7. That's a shame that he can't vote next week
Especially as this election is so important. Most of Julie's friends who are already 18 will vote for Ségolène. Thanks for the good luck for the bac. Julie is pretty confident, with the exception of maths (she hates it and is doing bac S).

France as a choice is understandable for your son, but China... wow! That's a big adventure and I understand your feelings. I'm glad that Julie will stay in Europe, at least for the moment. She has friends who want to study in Australia and Chile. It's nice that the kids can go wherever they want now but it's not that easy for the parents. But well... what can I say, I left Germany too when I was younger...

10. Happy Birthday to William,
and congratulations to him for becoming a registered voter. :patriot:

Lucky him, he'll have the privilege of voting for Sen. Kerry in '08. (If he so chooses.)

11. Congratulations!
My daughter turns 18 at the end of June. We're off to visit college campuses this weekend and next weekend so she can make an informed choice about her future. She's excited that she'll be able to vote in the next presidential election, and so far as she told JK last week, she's leaning towards Obama.

There's some kids kids among the good people of this group. Congrats to you Mass - enjoy the celebration.
