When did Sen. Kerry start writing his book?
I'm curious because there is a post on another board saying that he's only promoting TMOE because of the success Gore had with his environmental work, and that Kerry is ripping off Gore. I'm sure that this book has probably taken more than a year to write, which would put it back before Gore enviro-mania. Anybody have an answer?

1. I remember something about it in 2005 (?)
It seems like it was not long after the election, early in 2005--something about Sen. Kerry working on a book. Hopefully somebody else has more hard evidence.

2. You're right, but maybe you should tell the poster that
it's not a competition and direct them to this site where can learn a lot more.

3. He started it over two years ago
before Gore's big success and Gore wrote an endorsement on the back of the book. More importantly, it does not have the same topic as Gore's book. Gore's book is nearly exclusively on the science and issues of global warming; Kerry's book is focused on people who looked at an environmental problem and with little or no help and somtimes hinderance on the part of the government worked to make things better. As background, all sorts of environmental problems, including toxins, clean air, clean water and green buildings are covered.

This is the dumbest comment I ever heard. Are they suggesting there should be one and only one book one each subject. Think how small libraries would be. The environment was a natural thing for the Kerrys to write about. Teresa has been a leading environmental philanthophist, who has worked and supported work on how toxins impact health, incuding cancer and on how to create green environments - both indoors and outdoors. John Kerry was instrumental on getting the NE governors to implement the first cap and trade program for sulphur to mitigate acid rain, this became the prototype for the same provision in the Clean Air act. Kerry was on Gore's committee which was the first Senate committee to hold hearings on global warming. It was also a very major element of his 2004 run. Kerry incidently had a 96 life time League of Conservation Voters average, while Al Gore was in the 60s - reflecting the fact that Kerry has been an advocate of an extremely broad range of environmental issues.

They met many of the people covered in the book when he ran in 2004. Part of the motivation to write a book was to encourage people to see what people can do on their own. The johnkerry.com web site have video/audio for many of the interviews the Kerrys gave last week. (The Tavis Smiley one has a very nice conversation on environmental justice - addressing issues like the way these additional burdens are placed in the poorest part of town.

4. Before Gore's movie was a hit.

He discussed it during his speech at the fundraiser/birthday party on 12/11/2005. It was obvious then that it wasn't something they'd just thought up.

Later, several times, they have mentioned that the idea occurred to them while on the campaign trail in 2004, because people kept telling them these stories, and they thought it was important to promote what these individuals had been doing.

You can also refer them to Kerry's long history of environmental activism. I posted earlier today on another thread with a few items - I'll go get that link.

Edit to add: here's the link to my earlier post:

Also I would like to say that that particular meme is really starting to tick me off.... :banghead:

5. I'm not going to post there
I try to limit myself to one board, but if it comes up in person when I get back to Colorado I want to be armed with the facts.

6. It is not ripping off Gore. Gosh, how narrow minded some people are.
Gore did not stake a claim to all environmental issues, many people have written books on the environment and global warming including Price Charles of England. The whole idea that only one person can talk about an issue is asinine.
In fact, Gore endorsed the Kerry's book and in a very good way, it compliments the work Gore has done.

9. Kerry has a better lifetime record on the environment than Gore
not that it should matter, but these ignorant assholes need to be set straight.

if anyone knew or cared about the environment and Kerry's record on it they woudln't make this comment in the first place.
