This and that:
Congratulations MBS! Nice letter in the paper!

****************
Boston Globe Eileen McNamara column about Marty Meehan possibly leaving his Congressional seat in the Mass 5th to become head of U-Mass Lowell:

Say this for John F. Kerry: When the junior senator from Massachusetts realized that his presidential aspirations were dust, he went back to work at the job we elected him to do. He didn't toss his hat into the ring for the presidency of Harvard.

The impetus for Meehan's new job flirtation, on the other hand, is his own thwarted ambition. For as long as he has been in the House he has had his eye out for some other elective office with a higher profile. He toyed repeatedly with a run for governor. He filled his campaign war chest with nearly $5 million -- even as he volubly denounced the influence of money in politics -- anticipating a run for the Senate if Kerry had chosen to reprise his role as presidential candidate.

Kerry's decision to seek re election to the Senate and Democrat Deval Patrick's pledge to serve out his full term as governor locks the Lowell Democrat in place in the House. In this 110th Congress, with the misguided war in Iraq headed into its fourth bloody year, there is no more important place to be.

As chairman of that Armed Services subcommittee, Meehan is in a position to do more than support symbolic, nonbinding resolutions opposing President Bush's troop escalation in Iraq. He could join Massachusetts Senator Edward M. Kennedy's efforts to advance legislation that would prohibit the president from spending funds for additional troops in Iraq without first receiving authorization from Congress, a long-overdue assertion of legitimate congressional authority.

Meehan is scheduled to visit Iraq later this month and has promised to hold subcommittee hearings on the squandering of federal money meant for the reconstruction of that war-ravaged country. Now is not the time to leave Washington.

See, best therapy in the world is to go back to work. Highest calling in life right now, fight against that unjust and immoral war. Nice to see in print.

Also, another item in the Lowell Sun about a possible run by a (OMG, no!) Republican for that 5th congressional district seat should Meehan give it up. This guy, I can do without:

* Chris Egan. Active in Republican circles. Loaded. Last known residence was Hopkinton. That community is just outside the 5th, but candidates do not have to live in the district to run. Egan knows the 5th well. He recently produced the documentary Eclipsed By The Sun, which followed the 1972 congressional race in which John Kerry, battered by hard-hitting editorials and news stories in The Sun, lost to the late Andover Republican Paul Cronin. Cronin was the last Republican to hold the seat.

Slimeball. Here is an article on Egan and his slimey hit film: http://www.irishabroad.com/news/irishinamerica/news/EganMakesKerryFilm.asp

Bastids. Geez, the articles lists 3 Repubs who want to take Marty's seat. Right here, in my own backyard. Sigh! Man the barricades already. They are coming. Oy!

1. Marty should wait until 2008 if he wants a different job
Edited on Sun Feb-04-07 09:53 AM by rox63
Geez, we just reelected him. He actually has a chance to make a difference in Washington now that the Dems control Congress. If he's tired of being a Congresscritter, he should stay for now in the job we elected him to, and just decline to run for reelection in 2008. I'm sure the job offers would come pouring in for him then as well.

Call me a somewhat pissed-off constiuent.

2. I kind of agree
Besides, Marty could never be a Senator. He doesn't look like a Senator, right Rox! (How many times have I heard that one!)

3. Thanks. MBS's answer in the Globe was a great answer.
I have not read these articles about Meehan's seat, but is there a serious possibility that he would be interested by this position if it is offered to him?

11. Local paper says he'll likely accept if the job is offered to him
That same paper (the noxious Lowell Sun) says he's a shoo-in to get the job.

13. My husband is the pol in the family
I do support work. This is an arrangement that works wonderfully for me. (Very, very, very special people run for office. Very special people are there to help them out. Both are 'in the game' each according to their comfort level. LOL!

15. Hee hee
I pretty much figured that.

VERY special people are there to help them out.

Congressman Mr. TayTay doesn't sound so bad, though.

(But no offense to him, Congresswoman TayTay sounds even better. I don't know if D.C. would ever be the same. And, that would be a GOOD thing.)

I was kidding. But, I really did post, got told my post was in moderation, and I closed that window, and apparently it did eat my post.

Hmm. DD doesn't like me anymore. :-( Or maybe my posts are too tasty?

I have a new spam filter on and now I wonder if it did eat it. Drat! You should be able to put through comments hung up in Mod through the login panel though (at the Manage link) for future reference. Sorry about that. I just turned the darned new filter off to see what happens.

17. thanks, guys
It gets better. I saw JK at Drinan funeral and was able to tell him I thought it was coming. :woohoo: I'm planning to write up a post on this whole adventure soon. (I've been out of town, so it may take a day or so). The main thing for now is to give all of you this message from him, When I explained to him that I was one of "his" bloggers, he said, clearly meaning ALL of us, not just me: "KEEP AT IT." Got your marching orders, everyone?! ;)

Thanks, and I wanted to tell you that I really liked the last paragraph of your letter...it reminded me of what I thought when I heard Neil Young's "Lookin' for a Leader" on Friday .... "Neil, you HAD him, you just didn't recognize him!"

I'm so glad you got to talk to JK and thank you for relaying his message to us.
