The being pro-war was a biggie, because it tears into the very heart of John Kerry, who NEVER ONCE said he was for the war. No permanent bases a long while ago. Bottom line, be campaign savvy, and don't always expect your particular button pushed, or assume something hasn't been said, just because we don't hear it through the filter of media.
The primary may have run with the IWR as pro-war, but after we quoted the testimony ad nauseum from when he cast the vote, saying under no circumstances would he support pre-emptive, unilateral war for regime change, that was time for people to adjust their thinking. They were so invested in other candidates, they didn't want to like him. In other words, up the dialogue beyond prom king.
Practically, presidential candidates could not be seen to believe Saddam more than our president. Kerry was promised by our leadership that GW was going to do what he said, and use diplomacy. It was a terrible predicament, and he was starting his camapign. That said, people were curious about the hype, enough to want the inspectors in. The leverage worked. What would saying no do, to getting the inspectors in.
