My apologies. Somehow, I posted my message before it was finished.

1. Ahm, what is the point of refiling K/F now?
It expires when the 109th (Weasel) Congress expires next week or the week after.

This Amendment deserves a serious discussion in SFRC and on the floor of the Senate in Jan. What is the point of bringing back to a dying Congress that will ignore it?

3. I think Kerry is in diplomatic mode, Mass
Basically, he's been attacking Bush's policies for 2 years. Now Kerry and the Dems have real power in the Senate. So he's trying to keep things broad enough to allow a compromise that gets our troops out. If negotiations with the Bush admin. fail, it'll be a VERY LONG time before they get out. That or the Democrats will need to take drastic measures in the Congress, something they won't relish doing. And, also, the 7/1/07 date was with diplomacy that STILL hasn't occurred. Kerry is actually remaining consistent -- he said we need to set a date. He set that date to be a year from that time. The K/F amendment was in June so that was roughly a year. The date ITSELF was not cast in stone. He's certainly not going to repeat that date now, since nothing was done all summer and fall.

The point is to get the troops out within a timetable and to do diplomacy. That remains the same.

4. he's in bi-partisan mode--which is fine.
I think before he was in campaign mode, outlining the Dem position and creating a stark contrast with the "stay-the-course" repubs. Now that the actual work is going to be done, it's time to build, rather than burn bridges. Don't push the other side so hard that they dig in their heels.

I think the current Iraq policy won't hold much longer--a change is coming. The repubs won't take much more convincing.
