Quite frankly (and everything I'm saying in this post is spoken as a private citizen, please) I have no idea whether the infamous conversation, or something close to it, took place. I haven't asked anyone about it. I know that anyone I asked would say it didn't happen, and I'd say the same thing in an official capacity. But whether it did, is beside the point. MCM is using JK for sensationalistic purposes to advance himself -- all the while knifing him and knifing the Democratic Party.
The Democrats don't want to know that the United States is clearly not a democratic country, or that the Bush Republicans are dangerous extremists, intent on building a one-party theocratic state-so that the opposition now must go beyond the usual horse-race strategizing, and get re-acquainted with this nation's revolutionary heritage. Which means, I reckon, that the opposition has to move beyond the Democratic Party.
There are certainly people within the party who I believe are at least
complicit in covering up assorted things, mainly related to BCCI, probably also, unfortunately, to war crimes. John Kerry is not one of them and he is not the sort of person to cower in fear and denial when evidence is staring him in the face.
There are numerous people in Congress chomping at the bit to push election reform. If we take the House, Conyers' bill or something like it will pass. If we take the Senate or get a 50-50 chamber, then there will also be election reform legislation passed -- I sincerely hope not Hillary's, because hers is watered down and clearly intended for her to appear on top of an issue.
Miller is ridiculous in his crazy pronouncements. What does he want to happen, Green Party activists to firebomb Diebold headquarters? That sort of thing ("revolutionary heritage," "beyond the Democratic Party") appears to be what he thinks is necessary.
The public face of the opposition to the Iraq war started off with dodgy groups like A.N.S.W.E.R. and progressed to a huge population. This happened not because the original groups convinced millions of people, but because the people convinced themselves and many elected officials made it "legitimate." I expect that the verified voting movement will be the same way, and MCM and his ilk will become irrelevant.
