3. I'm confused, how can he give the speech at JHU at 8;30 and
take live questions at FT.com at 9:00AM ? I didn't see where they had changed the time of the speech.

JHU SAIS to Host National Security Briefing Featuring Senator John Kerry

The Johns Hopkins Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) will host a briefing, “National Security: A View From the Senate,” on Thursday, September 28 at 8:30 a.m.

The forum, hosted by the newly launched SAIS Center on Politics and Foreign Relations (CPFR) and the Financial Times, features the following participants:

*
John Kerry, Democratic senator from Massachusetts, will give the keynote remarks.
*
Guy Dinmore, U.S. diplomatic correspondent for the Financial Times
*
Robert Guttman, director of CPFR

Admittance to the briefing is by invitation only. However, the event is open to the media for coverage.

The session will be held in the Kenney Auditorium of the school’s Nitze Building, located at 1740 Massachusetts Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C.

The briefing with Senator Kerry is the inaugural event of the Center on Politics and Foreign Relations, a new research center at SAIS directed by Robert Guttman, a fellow at SAIS’s Foreign Policy Institute. CPFR’s overall goal is to debate, discuss and analyze the role domestic politics plays in a country’s foreign policy. The center will be connecting the worlds of politics and foreign relations not only in the United States but across the globe.

In partnership with the Financial Times, CPFR plans to host this series of breakfast briefings featuring all of the potential U.S. presidential candidates. During the upcoming year, CPFR will publish a series of “Political Profiles” newsletters about each of the potential candidates, highlighting their views of critical foreign policy issues of the day. The center also will hold conferences on such topics as the upcoming U.S. mid-term elections’ impact on foreign policy, the Middle East after the recent conflict in Lebanon, and domestic politics and foreign policy in Iran.

Media who want to cover this event should register with Felisa Neuringer Klubes in the SAIS Public Affairs Office at 202.663.5626 or fklubes@jhu.edu.

8. When all else fails,
there's always John Kerry. :loveya:

No wonder people have to work so damned hard to smear him - only to fail. He's one of my few true heroes.

I'm watching the Q & A session now. It hurts me to my core that this man is not the president NOW.

12. Gee, the introduction said this was one of the largest crowds
they have ever had. And the speech started early in the morning. The intro speaker noted how many supporters of Sen. Kerry had come out.

Oh wow! That is very encouraging.

13. The Q & A was great!
That British guy who said there was no difference between the two parties -- that, my dear friends, is a DU Lefty Freeper in real life. The best line from JK: "I guess I've wasted my whole life if I haven't shown a big distinction between me and them!" He had his hand on his heart for that!

He seemed kind of mad and just in a bad mood about how bad the Bush admin. is. I have to think that he felt this was a bad day, too, because he knew what was coming later in the day.

He also said that it hurt to see how the Bush admin. did absolutely NOTHING to help Abbas in the Palestinian Territory, and one year later, of course, Hamas won. He said "to be candid" that it hurt right then and there to know how different it would have been had he been president.

Those were just a few of the highlights. His speech was similar to the Faneuil Hall speech, but I felt like it wasn't his best delivery. The Q & A was where he became very animated, and showed him in a different light than I've seen him, as well as all of his different ideas.

14. That was the $64 million question
Kerry's response couldn't have been more perfect: it was essentially a smack down, but beautifully handled.

Awesome!

15. This part of his answer was particularly effective
I have proposed talking with Iran, directly, talking with Syria. That is different from this administration. I’ve proposed a date and summit that brings all the parties together to resolve the differences. That is different from this administration. I’ve acknowledged the occupation is a problem. That’s different from this administration. I’ve said we have to get our troops out. That’s different from this administration. I’ve said we must not have permanent military bases in Iraq. That’s different from this administration. I said we need to move forwardwith a legitimate policy to free us from the oil that feeds war. That’s different from this administration. So I think we are profoundly different from them not in nuance but in reality.

And it was delivered in machine gun speed, and COMPLETELY off the cuff. I mean -- damn -- this is the kind of oratory that is carefully written by speech writers with the luxury of time and fine editing. And he just came up with it on the spot.

Awesome.

16. That was awesome!
I even like the cadence in his delivery. Kerry also gave an excellent rebuttal to the false argument that links the Israeli/Palestinian conflict to the war on terror.
