Lieberman says troop pullout timelines 'doomed to fail'

EAST HAMPTON, Conn. -- Sen. Joe Lieberman said Monday that anti-war rival Ned Lamont's support for a troop withdrawal timeline in Iraq is "doomed to fail" and could leave the U.S. more vulnerable to terrorism.

"The clear choice before Connecticut's voters in this campaign is Ned Lamont's plan for giving up on Iraq and my plan for getting the job done there," Lieberman said in a speech at a Veterans of Foreign Wars post.

Lamont, who upset Lieberman last month in the Democratic primary, has argued that the war was a major mistake that has diverted resources from the war on terror. He favors beginning to withdraw front-line troops from Iraq while maintaining U.S. forces in the region for support.

"The Lamont plan for immediate withdrawal and an arbitrary deadline is doomed to fail and weaken our security," Lieberman said. "It will leave our troops more vulnerable to attack while they remain, and will leave Iraq to become a failed state and a terrorist breeding ground when were gone."

Debate over the war has dominated Lieberman's fight against Democrat Lamont, whose anti-war views helped propel him to victory in the Aug. 8 primary. Lamont has backed two Democratic Senate resolutions calling for a timeline: Sen. John Kerry's resolution called for a July 2007 deadline for removing all combat troops and another calling for troop pullouts to begin by the end of this year.

Can you even imagine what happens when Joe and John meet in the salad bar line at the Senate lunch room. That must be ahm, interesting.

he can look right over Joe's head and pretend he doesn't see him. Not that he'd be so rude, mind you. If I were in his place I'd be tempted to succumb to physical violence. ;-)

2. He's just saying anything at this point

Lieberman warned against withdrawing troops too soon, saying such a move would embolden terrorists and spark an all-out civil war in Iraq. But he also says he does not support an open-ended deployment of U.S. forces in Iraq.

3. Gee, good thing Joe's not 'the decider' cuz

he can't make a decision can he? He's just like that other Decider.

I don't know. If I met Joe in the salad bar line, I might hurl my broccolli at him. Then again, I am not as calssy as my Senator, so, there is that.

Knowing Joe, he would try to sneak celery onto to someones plate. That would probably be his level of humor.

4. And just think,

Joe was almost a heartbeat away from actually being "the Decider". (Of course overall, I suppose he would still be better than the Decider we currently have - but that's beside the point.) I feel good knowing that JK's VP choice is still an actual, what's the word I'm looking for ... oh yeah, Democrat.
