This hearing is about changing law that goes back to Magna Carta for heaven's sake. C-Span is falling down on it's duty to inform the public about what it's government is doing. Sigh!

Senate Panel Debates Detainee Bill

Republican and Democratic leaders of the Senate Judiciary Committee sought to slow down the effort by President Bush and Congressional leaders to speed the passage of legislation on the treatment of terror suspects.

Senator Arlen Specter, the Pennsylvania Republican who is the panel’s chairman, described as “inexplicable” a provision in the bill that would strip federal court of jurisdiction over detainees not formally charged with war crimes.

“If the courts are not open to decide constitutional issues, how is constitutionality going to be tested?’’ he asked.

Senator Patrick J. Leahy of Vermont, the committee’s senior Democrat, criticized the rush to pass the legislation, saying its restriction of court access would perpetuate “the indefinite detentions of hundreds of individuals against whom the government has brought no charges and presented no evidence, and without any recourse to justice whatsoever.’’

“This is un-American,’’ he said, to applause from the audience.

Does anyone know what is happening with this bill? Is it going to be voted on this week?

Unfortunately, neither of my senators are worth calling. Warner negotiated the darn thing, so he's not going to vote against his own plan, and Felix is less than useless. Has anyone called their senator? I read on the thread, that Cantwell is waiting for the "final language" of the bill. I'm not sure about any other Democratic senators.

10. Actual transcript of what Arlen Specter said to KarenDC's group

SPECTER: Well, thank you very much, gentlemen, for coming in today. Thank you, Senator Leahy and Senator Cornyn.

We will note the presence of people in this room who have been disrespectful and rude, and have made every effort to goad the chair into ousting them.

And I have restrained from doing that because it would cause more attention than simply by ignoring them.

But you are rude, you are disrespectful. This hearing has been held very much to promote the interests which you are articulating. And for you to come here and to stand up and you had your photo-op and then you turned around and you had your photo-op and you turned around again and had your photo-op, and tried very hard to be ousted when you spoke up, disrespectfully, to Senator Cornyn -- do not consider that your conduct is a precedent for what we will do in these hearings.

As the chairman, I will do what I can to minimize your intrusion, and that is by ignoring you.
