1. Oh my gosh
That's horrible. I didn't even know she was sick. She was one of the women I admired most in the world, she is going to be missed terribly.

2. Oh no.

I always liked her a lot. I've always appreciated strong women, including ones like Margaret Thatcher (which the real lefties in my family don't get), but Ann Richards was one who really deserved special respect.

4. "I did not want my tombstone to read, 'She kept a really clean house.' "
Edited on Wed Sep-13-06 11:34 PM by WildEyedLiberal
The silver-haired, silver-tongued Richards said she entered politics to help others — especially women and minorities who were often ignored by Texas' male-dominated establishment.

"I did not want my tombstone to read, 'She kept a really clean house.' I think I'd like them to remember me by saying, 'She opened government to everyone,'" Richards said shortly before leaving office in January 1995.

Ann Richards is an inspiration to fiery, contrarian women everywhere. Thanks for paving the way for us, Ann. You will not be forgotten.

6. Larry King is replaying and interview with Ann Richards from May 04
and she is singing John Kerry praises. There are many pictures flashed of Kerry with Richards and Kerry along. She was certain he was going to be elected. She even mentioned that she was happy to see that Kerry was not afraid to take on Bush and was frighting back. She even mentioned that Gore never fought back during his campaign with Bush, thinking he should stay above it all, but if you are constantly punched you have to punch back.
How sad how things turned out and now she is gone.

8. This is so sad.
She always reminded me of a dearly departed Great Aunt of mine - very southern, very quick witted and always ready to tell you exactly how things really are. You'll be missed Ann!

11. John Kerry on the Passing of Governor Ann Richards
“Intelligence, eloquence, wit, and moxie, Ann Richards was a great American maverick who had it all. She carved out a special place in history, in politics, and in our hearts. Beating the odds, as the first woman Governor of Texas in fifty years, only Ann Richards would laugh and say, she did it all ‘backwards and in high heels.’ Her larger-than-life leadership will be missed by all of us who knew her, but most of all by the family that loved her, including Cecile, who carries on her passion for progressive causes.”

Very well said, Senator.
