Please refresh my memory guys and gals......
During the debates in 2004, was it JK or John Edwards that brought up the fact that Cheneys daughter was a lesbian (however briefly, and without malice) Ran into this on another GD post today, and to my recollection it was John Edwards, when he was debating Cheney. This guy thought it was Kerry, and I called him on it. Please help me recall, as I know I'm mot totally braindead yet!! Thanks, DC

1. Edwards talked about it first
10/5/04, VP debate at Case Western Univeristy, Cleveland Ohio

IFILL: The next question goes to you, Mr. Vice President.
...

Can you describe then your administration's support for a constitutional ban on same-sex unions?

...

Edwards:

Now, as to this question, let me say first that I think the vice president and his wife love their daughter. I think they love her very much. And you can't have anything but respect for the fact that they're willing to talk about the fact that they have a gay daughter, the fact that they embrace her. It's a wonderful thing. And there are millions of parents like that who love their children, who want their children to be happy.

And I believe that marriage is between a man and a woman, and so does John Kerry.

I also believe that there should be partnership benefits for gay and lesbian couples in long-term, committed relationships.

But we should not use the Constitution to divide this country.

...

IFILL: Mr. Vice President, you have 90 seconds.

CHENEY: Well, Gwen, let me simply thank the senator for the kind words he said about my family and our daughter. I appreciate that very much.

IFILL: That's it?

CHENEY: That's it.

2. Well they both did, in different ways
Edwards did first: something about what good parents the Cheneys were, etc, in accepting their daughter. And Cheney said "thanks" and that was that. Then Kerry, during the third debate made the comment about how Mary Cheney. That questioon was whether homosexuality was nature or nurture. And for some reason, the RW exploded. Well we know the reason--they needed to distract from the fact that JK had won ALL THREE debates!

3. Kerry was excessively polite and brought it up 3 times
The RW resented having this brought up at all and did a fake outrage thing about how Kerry was trying to 'rub it in.' Typical Rethug bs.

5. 3 times? I didn't realize it came up other than in the 3rd debate
I loved Kerry's answer otherwise. The point may have been that a Cheney daughter who supports her dad's positions would if it were a choice be highly unlikely to choose something that puts her at odds with those goals.

8. I agree with what you wrote below
the response from Sen. Kerry was not great at the end. The question in the debate was a gotcha anyway, as it was in the VP debate. The media wanted to know how the two Dems could be okay with Gays and not okay with Gay Marriage, especially since Kerry came from Massachusetts. (Which is a silly question. Must because Kerry is from Mass, doesn't mean he write all the laws in Massachusetts. He is a federal representative. He voices opinions about what goes on in Mass, but he is elected to federal office.)

6. they campaign on hating gays and hated it that Kerry brought up
Edited on Sun Sep-03-06 11:13 PM by JI7
their own vp's daughter is lesbian. yeah, it was partly for political reasons and to throw the hypocrisy in their faces that Kerry did it. and they hated that.

the Cheney parents loved it that ALan Keyes called their daughter a selfish hedonist because she is a lesbian. and, Keyes daughter is a lesbian also.

12. That's all it was!
The Repubs would have people believe that this is petty, but they are hypocrites. They spend millions of dollars attacking and demonizing gays, then condemn anyone who exposes their hypocrisy. Remember Mary Cheney's recent attacks. What's that about? It seems it's okay for Rove, Melhman and the rest of the COP hyprocrites to attack gays, but damn it, don't call her gay!

13. that's what makes me so angry about it
it would be one thing if it was a private belief. but they publicly campaigned on it. i know that Kerry's bringing up Mary Cheney was part of a strategy. the rest of his answer was very heartfelt and nice. even the comments on Cheney were nice.

but it just makes me disgusted how they get outraged over what he said as if he did something horrible. yet they get away with all the shit they do. and the whore media never once called them on it.

and Lynne Cheney's Kerry is a bad man comment made me the sickest. the disgusting filth she is married to and she herself is a cold hateful disgustign bitch who never accepted her daughter. look at themselves in the mirror and all they ahve harmed and see who is the bad person there.

4. Both did
Edwards first while debating Cheney.

Kerry when asked if homosexuality was a choice or if you were born that way. Kerry's answer was beautiful - except for the comment that Mray Cheney, a lesbian would say that was the way she was - or something to that effect. It was clearly something the strategists told him to do, his voice sounded like he was unconfortable with that phrase in an otherwise heart felt kind answer.

9. well it really stuck in my mind because of Lynn Cheney
When she got behind a microphone and said, "this is not a good man!" I wanted to jump through the tv and shake some sense into her! If anybody is not a good man, she needs only to look at the wretch she's married to and she'll find one. John Kerry is a very, very, kind and good man!!!

10. The Repubs are all huge hypocrites
on the issue:

In Chapter 9, "A Few Simple Questions: What's in Karl's Closet?," the authors draw on interviews with gay acquaintances of Rove's stepfather, Louis Rove, as well as an interview with a circumspect Karl Rove, to reveal that Louis was openly gay after getting divorced from Rove's mother. The chapter jabs hard at Rove, pointing out that Louis Rove, who was clearly Rove's primary father figure, died in Palm Springs just as "his son was in the midst of launching the antigay issues campaign that was to lead to the re-election of George W. Bush."

11. Kerry's during the debate was more subtle,
just a short little phrase within an answer. To be honest, I didn't react at all to the answer when I first heard it. Only after it was replayed ad nauseum - because it was more significant than Bush's forgetting his own quote that getting OBL was not something he spent much time thiking of.

The comments were completely positive - only if you had a problem with gays could it be seen as negative. ( substitute any other neutral characteristic ie "blonde" or "short" ) and the comment is fine. She was out and it was an accurate descriptor.

As Ginny said if not for making an issue of this comment - the fact was that Kerry won this debate as well as he won the first one. Bush was better than in the first one - but the OBL crack should have been the big quote. (Not Lynne Cheney's "bad man" comment - though she should know "bad man", she's married to one.)
