Devlin Develops New Stargates
(snip)
Dean Devlin, co-writer and producer of the original Stargate movie, told SCI FI Wire that he has struck a production deal with MGM and is developing the long-delayed sequel feature films that will pick up the story from the 1994 original—but not the mythology subsequently elaborated on in the SCI FI Channel original series Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. Devlin added that he hopes to enlist original stars Kurt Russell (Jack O'Neill) and James Spader (Dr. Daniel Jackson), who have expressed an interest.

Well that's interesting. I'm not a fan - not that I dislike the TV show I just haven't taken the time to add it to my limited TV rotation. In fact I only saw the movie on TV late last year and I liked the movie better than I expected frankly ... still I haven't picked up the TV show. But it seems a pretty bold move to make a new movie without making any accommodation for the mythology of the TV show. It'll be interesting to see how fans react.

1. I've never been much of a Stargate fan
The show's doing fantastic, I'll admit. I just never liked it. (Too episodic for my tastes. Babylon 5 and Battlestar Galactica have spoiled me)

But there's this interesting quip at the end of the article that surprised me. I thought Devlin was being a bit of a jerk for deciding to "pick up the story from the 1994 original" when I heard about this a while back.

Then I read this:
The sequels would steer clear of the TV show mythologies, Devlin added. "That's right," he said. "We would just continue the mythology of the movie and finish that out. I think the series could still live at the end of the third sequel. So we're going to try to not tread on their stories." (Emphasis mine)

And I thought that was nice; Devlin wants to do more with the universe he created, but is showing some respect for the television series.

2. I Re-watched The Movie...
last weekend. I had only seen it once before and liked it much better the second time around. I was actually thinking, right after, that it would be cool if they brought Spader back for a few episodes of SG-1. The "Chicken-man Returns"...

3. Boy Do I Feel Stupid!
I just watched the pilot of Atlantis (I haven't seen but one or two SG-1's)and learned that Jackson has been around for a long time. I guess that would preclude Spader from making an appearance on SG-1. ...as Daniel Jackson anyway.

4. Well...
James Spader could be an "alternate universe" Daniel Jackson.
Oh, wait. They had an "alernate universe" Jackson.

He could be a clone.
Or did they do that too?

He could be Jackson's evil twin brother.
Or did they do that also?

5. The Clone Thing I Could See,...
but did they really do an "evil twin brother"? I guess it's hard work coming up with ten seasons worth of plot. It does sound a bit like a daytime soap though.

6. They haven't cloned Daniel Jackson yet
I don't think. But they have killed him, ascended him, and reincarnated him (as his self) twice (that I know of). There was also an alternate universe ending for season 8 that had O'Neill and Carter married IIRC. Oh, and they had to kill alternate Daniel. I may not be recalling this quite correctly, but if you're interested then check out GateWorld for all things Stargate.

Check out GateWorld that is. I plan on getting into SG-1 at some point and absolutely hate, spoilers. I can figure out an entire episode from a single thread title. Sounds fun though.

8. Yeah, it is fun.
And that's what I like about Stargate. It doesn't take itself too seriously.

9. I was being facetious.

Or was it sarcastic? (I always get those two mixed up.)

I've never liked Stargate SG-1.

10. Me Too.
Kinda, sorta. I think it facetious though.
