The future's so bright it's... British?
BBC News Magazine (aggregated here at NG) is reporting that for the first time ever in its' 63 year history, all the writers nominated for science fiction's biggest award, the Hugo in the Best Novel category are British. There may be good reason.

American science fiction has become lackluster in the years following the Sep. 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center towers in New York. Perhaps reflective of the tensions that U.S. citizens feel and also perhaps reflective of the black and white values the Bush administration has championed the U.S. science fiction scene has seen a glut of films based on comic book superheroes. Meanwhile American authors look to the past in alternate history novels. Not so on the other side of the pond.

This probably also tracks our decaying lead in the sciences and engineering.
