Anyone see last night's Doctor Who?
I saw it as a thinly disguised scathing indictment of media consolidation, which ultimately leads to unknowing enslavement (by a giant slug like creature, of course).

2. I suspect they're being a bit more political than before ...
It's only halfway through the season (I've been watching the new series on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation). But so far they've had the giant slug enslaving people via TV -- the Slitheen planning to sell off Earth in the ultimate privatization scheme (which also involves tricking people into starting a war because of "Massive Weapons of Destruction that could hit us in 45 seconds") -- and an egotistical American businessman (with a Bush-type accent) endangering everybody just for his own gratification.

I recall that the old series had its moments of social criticism too -- for example, the "Pirate Planet" (a giant mechanized spaceship that clamps around worlds and siphons off all the resources). And the time when the self-proclaimed "good guys" turn out to be oppressing a small group of aboriginals (that watery planet with all the reeds on it) -- meanwhile, the occupiers themselves are in doubt, and there's a strong resistance movement within the society that's turning away from imperialism. But that was big-picture stuff, and I don't remember as many references to current events as they're making now.

Whatever the case, I like it!
