Wow...Card Really is Out There.... (Hypocrites of Homosexuality)
I knew Card had extreme views...I just didn't know they were THAT extreme. I'm never reading another thing he writes ever again.

The Hypocrites of Homosexuality

By Orson Scott Card
from Sunstone magazine

When I was an undergraduate theatre student, I was aware, and not happily so, how pervasive was the reach of the underculture of homosexuality among my friends and acquaintances. After a while I stopped being shocked to discover that someone I had known well, or whose talent I admired, was either moving into or already a part of the not-so-clandestine network of gay relationships. I learned that being homosexual does not destroy a person's talent or deny those aspects of their character that I had already come to love and admire. I did learn that for most of them their highest allegiance was to their membership in the community that gave them access to sex. As a not-particularly-pure-minded heterosexual adolescent, I understood the intensity of sexual desire; as a student of human communities, I have since come to understand how character is shaped by -- or surrendered to -- one's allegiances.

One thing is certain: one cannot serve two masters. And when one's life is given over to one community that demands utter allegiance, it cannot be given to another. The LDS church is one such community. The homosexual community seems to be another. And when I read the statements of those who claim to be both LDS and homosexual, trying to persuade the former community to cease making their membership contingent upon abandoning the latter, I wonder if they realize that the price of such "tolerance" would be, in the long run, the destruction of the Church.

We Latter-day Saints know that we are eternal beings who must gain control of our bodies and direct our lives toward the good of others in order to be worthy of an adult role in the hereafter. So the regulation of sexual drives is designated not just to preserve the community of the Saints but also to improve and educate the individuals within it. The Lord asks no more of its members who are tempted toward homosexuality than it does of its unmarried adolescents, its widows and widowers, its divorced members, and its members who never marry. Furthermore, the Lord even guides the sexual behavior of those who are married, expecting them to use their sexual powers responsibly and in a proportionate role within the marriage.

snip................

Laws against homosexual behavior should remain on the books, not to be indiscriminately enforced against anyone who happens to be caught violating them, but to be used when necessary to send a clear message that those whoflagrantly violate society's regulation of sexual behavior cannot be permitted to remain as acceptable, equal citizens within that society.

1. Oy... I'd no idea.
Time for a few books on my shelves to go into the trash. This is quite disgusting, what he's saying.

What a sad, ignorant man.

3. yuck
IMHO some of his books reeked this way, so it is not a big surprise. I tried reading "The Memory of Earth" and threw it in the garbage after roughly half of it.

Also his " am Democrat but vote for Bush" mantra is getting lame. In how many elections has he given that statement? was it in three or four?.

4. Oh fuck him right in the ear.
Boycotting his work is no great loss IMO. Ender's Game sucked ass and that wasn't even the worst thing he wrote.

Asshat.

9. He used to teach at UNC-G... send it in care of the English Dept.
and I'm sure it'll get to him.

It's sad to watch someone decend into such obviously anti-christian behavior all in the name of social comfort.
What happened to loving your fellow man as Jesus loved?
What happened to tolerance, understanding and compassion?

If you want to make a personal statement try out his website, www.hatrack.com.

You see where he goes wrong... he puts his church above basic human compassion and tolerance.
And that is just sad because his first book of short stories was one of the most amazing books I'd ever read... easily ranking him with Ellision in terms of creative story telling, AFAIC.

I even got him to autograph it for me back in the early 90's when he came through Chapel Hill for a reading.

Now I just cringe every time I read his more heinous stupidity.

8. Gay is not Scientology.
Nobody demands total allegence to the Elders of Satin. He just made this shit up.:eyes:

As a gay man, I can honestly say that there's no loyalty oaths, or is there any toaster oven prizes. There is a biting sense of humor that uptight has-been authors don't seem to get though, and not all of us have that (Look at Andrew Sullivan, better yet, don't. :puke: ).

10. No big loss.
I never understood why Card thought he was so great.

I also think he might have some suppressed gender issues. Have you ever read his homoerotic early work: "Songmaster"? The rest of his stuff, "Planet Called Treason", etc. is pretty average IMHO. His claim to fame was milking his short story "Ender's Game" into a career of endless sequels. He is the "Macaroni and Cheese" of science fiction.

He tries to be both an intellectual, and a member of a backwards religion (mormonism). I guess his personal development has hit the wall. No big loss, there's better stuff out there.

11. Two allegiances?
Some Christians would similarly say that you can't be both Mormon and a Christan. I guess he doesn't see the hypocrisy in his own words.

13. Not news to me.
It took me reading two books of his to get a good idea of where he comes from. His more recent books have been far less camoflaged promotions of his LDS ideals.

14. Ick.
So laws against homosexual behavior are not there to be used willy-nilly, but as a constant threat against any *particular* queers who get too uppity? Does it sound as though Card is almost consciously aware that such laws are inhumane? Is he feeling a touch of guilt? But as long as homosexuals offer Card their total allegiance, he will graciously permit them to roam the streets, just like real people.

What a pathetic little fundamentalist. How long must he chant "But I love them" to himself at night before he can fall asleep?

I wonder who ghost-wrote Xenocide for him?

15. Damn, I guess I won't be buying the Iron Man book he's writing

I'm going to write Marvel to express my disgust at hiring this fuckwit, along with copies of some of his verbal diarrhea. Maybe if enough comic fans write in, Marvel will fire his ass.
