The latest issue of Columbia Journalism Review has a sobering, no frightening, article about the rise of evangelical christian news outlets. For starters it describes CBN, the Christian Broadcasting Network, which employs over 1,000 people and has facilities in three U.S. cities as well as the Ukraine, the Philippines, India and Israel. The article says the growth of evangelical radio and tv stations are exploding and most of it is under the radar of the MSM (except Rupert Murdock).
This is what we are up against and it's growing by leaps and bounds. They distort the news to fit the RW christian philosophy. I occasionally listen to these radio stations on the way to West Virginia every week and they are really slick. They have become very professional at delivering the news and sounding rational.
Get a copy of this issue if you can (there's also a good article about Sinclair Broadcasting in the same issue). At some point (soon!) we are going to have to figure out how we can combat this. I think we, as atheists, are going to have to become more assertive and visible.
