Mass hysteria
I have reports from european news describing apocalyptic conditions in Rome for the grand simulacre. People fainting, assaulting each other over parking spaces, car or feet, scenes of panic, screams, perhaps deaths. Sometimes I wonder whether religion is not closer to animality than it seems...

2. The need for understanding is whats exploited.
People incapable of critical thinking often turn to religion to "fill the gaps". The mental disorder is the aftereffect on how the religion, once embraced, alters your perspective on more than the gaps your mind was looking to fill. Its like a cancer, once you have it, it will grow and eat everything around it unless you get help for it.

5. Remember when Khomeini croaked?
The mourners started a riot and, IIRC, yanked his corpse right out of the coffin. Or nearly did.

The word "irrational" doesn't even begin to describe this phenomenon...

6. I think the corpse formerly known as Khomeini actually did hit the floor!
But hey, we should be respectful. After all, he was a deeply religious man.

12. It was like that in London for the Diana funeral
It seemed at the time that the Enlightenment was falling to bits around our ears; I wrote a piece about it. After a very short while, the fuss was forgotten and the follow-up found most participants were rather embarrassed that they had been so carried away.
