A wake up call for all of us. The CRA Bill
Recently, the Republicans have introduced this abomination of a Bill that would essentially convert this country from a secular nation to a theocratic one. The Constitutional Restoration Act, would clarify the intent to make the laws of this land God's Law.

The time to act is here, and this is the critical turning point. We are at a crossroads, and the future is looking bleak.

The trouble with fighting this, is that the religious communities are too busy defending their little slice of the God pie, while the institutions they are a part of perpetuate this attack on our rights, freedoms, and constitution.

<SNIP>

Notwithstanding any other provision of this chapter, the Supreme Court shall not have jurisdiction to review, by appeal, writ of certiorari, or otherwise, any matter to the extent that relief is sought against an entity of Federal, State, or local government, or against an officer or agent of Federal, State, or local government (whether or not acting in official or personal capacity), concerning that entity's, officer's, or agent's acknowledgment of God as the sovereign source of law, liberty, or government.

<SNIP>

note the portion as written... "agents acknowledgment of God as the sovereign source of law, liberty, or government."

This simply states that the judiciary must acknowledge God's Law above Man's Law. I'm sure many of you can see the implications of this...

Full Bill found here:

Scary reading. Suggest doing so BEFORE eating.

Can also read a good editorial and analyses of this law here.

Spread the word... It seems the Athiests are the only ones willing to take on this problem... and we know what we are up against...

This is not going to be easy.

1. Yup, this is about as scary as it gets!
Not just for me, or us, but even for the average American.

Personally, I hope this bill gets a lot of Republican cosponsors (if any Democrat cosponsors this bill, they deserve to be soundly defeated next election!) because the average American will find this bill frightening and offensive. In fact I think we could use this bill very effectively to paint the entire Republican party as being out of control and a pack of idiots.

Frankly, I think this could be the one bill that could change the mood of the country. I'm certain that the vast majority of Americans do not want their laws and rights to be dictated by wacky and often conflicting interpretations of the Bible, or the many other religious texts that proved guidance to other religious sects.

This is our golden opportunity, folks, to hang these bastards. We need to study this bill and come up with a bunch of worst-case scenarios and publicize them. If we scan the news media we should be able to find plenty of actual court cases where loony religious zealots went to court to force their religious beliefs on the public, or the public went to court to force a halt to some religious loony activity. I'm certain that if we can sufficiently publicize the ramifications of this bill we will have the majority of Americans on our side, and we may even be able to do some serious damage to the GOP and make them think twice before pandering to their Fundie base.

2. Well, if you care to join me in forwarding this to Democratic
Congresspersons and demanding they bring this in front of the media at every turn. This NEEDS to be brought in front of the American public. We cannot let this one get buried by the media.

3. Certainly!
And LTTEs as well. Also, we all need to write letters (or emails) to the DNC demanding a concerted reply by Democrats. This needs to be handled carefully so that their opposition isn't perceived as anti-religion, but protecting America from religious extremists.

5. This will be buried
first class after a parody of discussion. This is plain and simple what the democratic party has accepted in 2000 and in 2004. A healthy constitutional crisis was denied to this country, the constitution of which has been handed to religious fanatics. Pussy-footing cannot work and our hezbollahs have now 25 millions ways of furthering their agenda. There is such a thing as "too late". As we all know here, it will get worse before it can have even a chance to get better.

4. Even comes packaged with the usual doublespeak brand name...
'Constitutional Restoration Act.'

Ugh.

6. Makes for setting up their "talking point" to the media
with its shit sandwich with a candy coating to make it easier to swallow.

7. I want to think that this is too ridiculous to even be considered...
but then I think of the ongoing Pope-a-thon, the Schiavo debacle and the simple fact that chimpy was re-elected and it doesn't seem to far fetched.

8. Well, it IS being considered. I think the USSC will toss it
out like last weeks garbage. BUT...

They are trying it, and this is the perfect Bill to show to the public about where the RW and its Fundie base wants this country to go. Its all for show, of course, but this could make them look real bad if it gets some good media coverage.
