NEW JERSEY: Atheism Billboard Goes Up At Lincoln Tunnel
NEW JERSEY: Atheism Billboard Goes Up At Lincoln Tunnel

The American Atheists have erected the above billboard at the New Jersey entrance to the Lincoln Tunnel as part of a campaign to encourage people to "come out of the closet" about their atheism and "stop going through the motions" of taking part in Christmas shopping and celebrations. Some Christians, who are not the target of the campaign, are upset.

“I don’t think it’s any good for the kids. I’ve got a 7-year-old daughter — she believes in Christmas,” one woman told 1010 WINS’ Terry Sheridan. “I don’t think that’s right. We don’t go around telling them what we think about , so why should they put up something like that,” another man said. The billboard went up the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and is expected to be up through Christmas Day. Silverman said atheists were unfairly targeted in the “war on Christmas,” a phrase often related to the public display of Christmas imagery on government funded property. “We get blamed for a war on Christmas every year. This time we’re actually going to pay attention to that. We’re actually going to earn a little bit of that,” Silverman said. “We have been blamed repeatedly for being unpatriotic, we have been told that there are not atheists in fox holes, we have been told that we are immoral. Nobody has ever cared if we would be offended.” While acknowledging “everybody has the right to believe as they see fit,” Silverman said his group believed there were “a lot more people” who were atheists, but feared publicly admitting it. “A lot of people in church, a lot of people in the mosque, a lot of people in the synagogue know they’re praying to air,” Silverman said.

2. "I don't think it's any good for the kids."
But teaching them to believe in nonsense is good for them, I guess.

5. Idiocracy in action. Any doubt Americans are getting stupider by the day?
Myself, I'm happy to celebrate Christmas (or the "Mid-Winter Buying Holiday" as we like to call it) as a purely secular event involving presents, parties, and family.

And I don't get too bothered if family members happen to believe in fairy tales (such as their spouse is attractive or that their children are exceptional).

7. Funny how insecure believers are
If your faith is strong then seeing ANYTHING written by atheists shouldn't matter ONE LITTLE BIT. I know all the biblical nonsense I see every day doesn't mean a thing to me.

9. Funny how they use their own terminology as insults.
Evangelizing means spreading the Gospel and it's usually considered a good thing among the Jesus crowd, yet when they see atheists encouraging other atheists to come out of the closet, so-to-speak, they hurl evangelizing around as an insult.

11. lol very true.
And then they accuse atheists of doing the same thing they do...Trying to convert EVERYONE TO think the same way.
There are beleivers who literally seem to be not able to think about ANYTHING without dragging god/religion into it.

15. Some theists must feel some deep guilt or shame about their beliefs.
Considering who's slinging shit in that one thread, it's not surprising that some inner demons may be playing a role.

10. I was pleased to hear radio doc Dean Edell speak approvingly of the billboard yesterday
Edited on Tue Nov-30-10 10:05 AM by salvorhardin
Then he referenced the Science Based Medicine blog in the very next segment! :D

Here's a direct link to the mp3: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/DrDeanEdellAudioArchivesForPodcastStreamOrDownload/~3/dI_ZJu56LFs/2010-11-29-11400.mp3

That's a direct rip of KGO's web stream so the news is up first. Dean Edell's program starts about 6m 30s in and the atheist billboard segment is right near the top of the show.

14. I love free speech in NY.
Anybody, any time just stands up (or puts up a billboard) and says what they think! Love it.
