50 Cent Disagrees With Kanye West

Rapper 50 Cent says he disagrees with West's infamous statement that "George Bush doesn't care about black people," proclaimed during a September telethon for Hurricane Katrina victims.

"I think people responded to it the best way they can," 50 told ContactMusic.com. "What Kanye West was saying, I don't know where that came from."

Instead, 50 said, "The New Orleans disaster was meant to happen. It was an act of God."

Oh. So God hates black people.

1. One of my favorite "prophecies..."
Reason will be replaced by Revelation...Justice will be replaced by Pity as the cardinal virtue, and all fear of retribution will vanish...

The New Aristocracy will consist exclusively of hermits, bums and permanent invalids. The Rough Diamond, the Consumptive Whore, the bandit who is good to his mother, the epileptic girl who has a way with animals will be the heroes and heroines of the New Age, when the general, the statesman, and the philosopher have become the butt of every farce and satire.

King Herod explaining why he has to do hunt down Baby Jesus and kill him, in W.H. Auden's For The Time Being: A Christmas Oratorio (from 1938).

As depicted by Auden, Herod is a moderate ruler and classic Good Liberal. He doesn't really want to whack Baby Jesus. But he clearly sees the consequences of a belief system where "reason is replaced by revelation."

He was dead on. IMO, that second paragraph is an absolutely accurate description of modern American society. It sums up everything from The Psychic Friends Network to Britney Spears. And lunkheads like 50 Cent, of course.

2. "The Rough Diamond, the Consumptive Whore..." So true.
Yet another to put on my reading list.
