Hit pieces on Gore

Has anyone else noticed that there appears to be a concerted effort to discredit Gore this past week or so? One blogger on the attached link thinks it has to do with Gore's endorsement. I am not so sure. Many corporations stand to lose their shirts if we address the climate crisis. I personally think that that is the reason for the multiple attacks.

So, is anyone interested here in continuing to discuss Al Gore and his 'campaign of another sort'? We could continue to post information here regarding his ongoing work both here and abroad and perhaps consider ways to defend him on the Internet tubes against rw attack dogs.

2. If it would work for him - it would work for me.

I think he is enough of a patriot that if seriously asked, he would do it. It would certainly silence the goons who say that Obama doesn't have enough foreign affairs experience. It would place the climate crisis front and center on the country's agenda. And he would certainly be able to pick up some demographics that Obama is weak on currently.

I know he's been there done that - but I think this is a different Al than even I was expecting.

Who knows what will happen between now and August?

Biden just said the same thing. Time will tell and we will see. I really don't see Obama asking Gore but, I have been wrong before and will be wrong again ;)

4. I think I posted this before -

I heard from one of the people I had a lot of e-mail and some phone conversations with that he had a conversation with people who Gore would receive phone calls from (friends/acquaintenances from way back; apparently one in this circle had served with Gore when he was first elected to the House or some such connection). These people said (and this was before Obama had the nomination) that if it was required, Gore would come out and endorse Gore right after the last primary so, if Hillary hadn't already conceeded, she would at that point. And, there had been discussions that Obama might need a "mentor" and Gore would fill that role by being his VP. A lot has happened since then, including the fact that Gore was very late in endorsing Obama so I'm not sure whether any of the rest of this is really going to happen. But, there it is for what it's worth. I weigh that against Gore's public statements that if he were ever to get back into politics it would only be at the presidential level. The summer is young, though, and a lot can happen before August.

I would like to continue to support him here in this forum one way or the other. Do you think you would still look in every once in a while?

6. Sure,

I still check in here periodically. And, just so none of the regulars here feel left out, you all should know that I promised Andrea a dinner when I'm in Ohio this fall trying to turn that state Blue. I'll be in Akron and Andrea is in Columbus so we'll settle on some place in between. If anyone else is in the area, let me know and (who knows) maybe I'll buy dinner for anyone who shows up. I figure I owe a lot of you DU faithfuls some kind of a thank-you for getting me in touch with kindred spirits. And, even though we weren't successful in what we all were hoping for, I'm personally content with Obama as a candidate and I'll work as hard as I can to try to get him elected in November. In the meantime, Gore isn't that old, and maybe he still has time to lead this country. If not that, at least he has left, and will continue to leave, a lasting impact on the country and the globe with his work, not just on global climate change, but his outspoken opposition to the Iraq war and all the other "criminal" activities of the present administration.

7. I've seen some really absurd hit pieces

The one that really gets me is when they try to blame him for the the food crisis. That's a really nasty attack - trying to lay all the starving people at his feet. It's like they will say anything to discredit him. I'm inclined to think that it is mostly what you said, Rose, a lot of corporations stand to lose a lot of money.

I do think if those corporations could think outside the box, they could get ahead of the curve on this and end up making a lot of money.

So, what would we do to defend him? Posts, blogs, LTEs?

8. It may be as simple as when there is a piece we see posted

somewhere, we provide a link to the offending article here. Then we go to the comments section and post enmasse our opposing views - perhaps inject some common sensical points, etc.

BTW, I've seen some snarky things written here by DUers in the past month... nothing to take too seriously but mostly just under the radar comments about how "conservative he is" and how lucky "we" were to dodge the bullet of him entering the race and that ol' chestnut of why did Gore pick Lieberman for his running mate.

Lots of articles appearing here and there about how he and Obama are pretty tight and that he is counseling him on who knows what at least once/week. It will be interesting to see what role he will play in this next administration.

9. Gore, conservative? We dodged a bullet? Wrong!

I hope Obama starts to take his counsel to heart. Obama's stance on FISA is very disturbing. I can't believe that anyone would post about how conservative Gore is. I assume that it is strong Obama supporters saying that, but Obama has changed so many positions and become so extremely right-wing in the last month that they are just fooling themselves. Gore is one of the few remaining liberals in the Democratic party.

10. I think there a lot of odd balls on the site

right now. I don't take anyone at their word except those DUers I knew before the silly season started. I just take a few deep breaths and move on. I think for some people here it's their first silly season and/or the first politician they have ever actively supported.

I like Obama. But this adoration makes me very uncomfortable. However, I do have to remind myself to take it with a grain of salt as I certainly was much the same with Bill Clinton in the 90s.

11. Some very good points

It's a shame we can't fully accept new people in our minds, but you are right, there are some very strange people here anymore.

I actually don't think I was ever that adoring with any candidate. I've certainly supported some very whole-heartedly, but I never felt like any of them were perfect, nor was I ever in complete agreement on every issue with any of them.
