DI sentenced to hard labor in abuse case

OCEANSIDE, Calif. — A military jury sentenced a drill instructor at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego to 90 days of hard labor but no confinement in the brig after finding him guilty of one count of willful dereliction of duty, Marine officials said.

The jury, in handing down its sentence Friday evening in the special court-martial of Sgt. Robert C. Hankins, also sentenced him to demotion to lance corporal, depot spokeswoman Maj. Kristen Lasica said in a news release.

The jury acquitted Hankins of other charges, including violating a lawful order, making a false official statement, damaging non-military property and misprision, or concealing, of serious offenses, Lasica said.

Hankins was a senior drill instructor who supervised three other drill instructors with 2nd Recruit Training Battalion who were training members of Platoon 2167 one year ago.

The Corps investigated allegations of recruit abuse by several of the drill instructors over a seven-week period. The junior drill instructor, Sgt. Jerrod Glass, initially faced 225 charges, including kicking, punching and slapping recruits.
