HOUGHTON, Mich. — Starting next year, Michigan Technological University plans to offer in-state tuition to out-of-state students who are a child or spouse of a person on active U.S. military duty.

John Lehman, assistant vice president for enrollment services, said the school believes the Military Family Education Award is the first of its kind nationwide. Michigan Tech’s board approved the program Friday.

“Our military men and women are putting their lives on the line for us every day,” school President Glenn D. Mroz said in a statement. “We hope that offering this educational assistance to their families will give them one less thing to worry about.”

For the 2007-2008 school year, in-state tuition and fees is $9,828, while out-of-state students pay about $21,000. The school’s decision was reported by The Daily Mining Gazette of Houghton and The Detroit News.

Students will be eligible for the award if a parent or spouse is on active military duty at the time the student applies to Michigan Tech. If a parent or spouse goes on active duty after a student is admitted, the student will be eligible for the award at the beginning of the next semester.
