Homemade food in the field? You bet

Lee Gi-nam serves up four bowls of bulgogi and rice just before noon. Lee says she and her sister have been cooking for U.S. troops training in the field in South Korea for 40 years.

Homemade food in the field? You bet

TACTICAL ASSEMBLY AREA TOM, South Korea — Spending time in the field means mosquitoes in the heat, frigid toes in the cold and, nearly always, homemade meals courtesy of Lee Gi-nam.

Lee and her sister have been cooking for U.S. troops in South Korea for 40 years, Lee said. They set up their tent inside the wire, stock coolers with frozen meats and cheese, bring homemade kimchi, and fry up comfort food one dish at a time.

“It’s just a little something to make you feel better,” said Capt. Ben Van Meter, of the 4th Battalion, 2nd Aviation Regiment, 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade, based out of Camp Humphreys.

The battalion was at TAA-Tom last week undergoing an external evaluation, drilling through a series of mock war scenarios to hone skills and to offer the commander a look at how the unit works in the field.

On Tuesday just before noon, Van Meter stood inside Lee’s tent in a growing but patient line. With only two burners and a grill, the cooking takes time. Still, no one gives up and leaves, especially when field training means the Army supplies hot breakfasts and dinners only.

uhc comment: Homemade kimchi brings a tear to my eye. If it's made correctly, it brings a lot of tears to my eyes.
