JURF AS SAKHIR, Iraq — Americans call the town “Jurfasucker.”

Jurfasucker, Jurfasucker, Jurfasucker.

Say it a few times. It’s fun — and in a bare-bones place like Patrol Base Jurf, the soldiers of Company A, 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division must be creative when it comes to entertainment.

“From what they said about (Company A’s 2005 deployment), I was expecting an actual forward operating base. Something a lot larger,” said Pfc. Ryan Shurtleff of Manchester, N.H.

A militarywide tactical shift toward living in the communities that the soldiers patrol changed the living conditions for many soldiers, but not all.
