More than 1,500 enlisted airmen are targeted for involuntary retraining in 2008, the Air Force announced Wednesday.
The move to require airmen to retrain into undermanned career fields comes after the service sought volunteers in June to change jobs. About 70 career fields are short of airmen.
If an airman does not agree to retraining, he will be told to leave the service on his current date of separation.
Airmen singled out must submit a retraining request by Dec. 17. After meeting the Dec. 17 deadline, airmen must choose an Air Force Specialty Code from a list of available career fields and submit a completed retraining application by Jan. 31.
“Airmen selected for retraining who have the necessary retainability cannot decline retraining,” Chief Master Sgt. Christine Williams, chief of the Air Force Personnel Center enlisted skills management branch, said in an Air Force statement. “All airmen identified as being retraining eligible must retrain or face separation under guidelines established for the retraining program.”
