PRAGUE, Czech Republic — U.S. Air Force experts will inspect a military area in the Czech Republic where Washington could place a proposed missile defense base, the Defense Ministry said Tuesday.
Russia has strongly opposed the U.S. missile defense plan, saying it could trigger a new arms race.
The 12 U.S. experts, arriving Wednesday for two days, planned to review the site within the Brdy military area, southwest of Prague, the ministry said in a statement.
The U.S., which also is seeking to place 10 interceptor missiles in Poland, says the missile defense system is needed to deal with a possible threat from Iran.
Moscow disputes Washington’s evaluation of the threat from Iran — where it is building a nuclear power plant and has close ties — and says it believes the real aim is to upset the strategic balance in favor of the U.S.
The U.S. team visiting the Czech Republic includes members from U.S.-based Air Force commands, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency.
