City, state and Coast Guard officials broke ground Tuesday morning on a methane gas-reclamation project at a landfill near the Coast Guard’s Baltimore shipyard, the service announced, and officially began work in what is to be the largest-ever renewable energy project for the lifesaving service.

Methane produced by a city landfill will power a plant that is set to provide electricity and steam for the shipyard for the next 20 years, the Coast Guard said. It will pay Baltimore $200,000 per year for the methane for the next 15 years. The energy and pollution savings from using the landfill gas is equivalent to taking 33,000 cars off local highways, according to the Coast Guard.

Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Thad Allen, Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon, and other public officials attended the groundbreaking, said Coast Guard spokeswoman Dottie Mitchell.
