Staff Report

The Pentagon announced Monday that 1,000 soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division will deploy to Iraq next spring.

The headquarters element of the Fort Drum, N.Y., unit “will provide command and control, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance” support for ongoing operations in Iraq, according to a Defense Department press release.

The headquarters element will follow the 10th Mountain’s 1st Brigade Combat Team, which just deployed to Iraq.

The announcement comes as the Pentagon has begun a downsizing of the surge of five additional brigades that began pouring into Iraq in the spring.

Deployment orders for 4,000 soldiers in the 4th Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team have been delayed. The brigade was slated to begin deploying this month to replace the 1st Cavalry Division’s 3rd BCT in Diyala province, a turbulent area north of Baghdad.

The troop strength in Iraq is around 160,000, of which about 130,000 are soldiers.
