NEW IBERIA, La. — A Navy jet was attempting to take off Thursday from Acadiana Regional Airport when an engine malfunction caused it to crash.

The pilot and co-pilot, who were the only ones aboard, successfully ejected from the aircraft before the crash, according to Iberia Parish Sheriff Sid Hebert.

It is unknown what caused the aircraft engine to malfunction.

The T-45 Goshawk jet was returning to Naval Air Station Kingsville, Texas, from a training mission off the Florida coast at the time.

“We’re not going to speculate on the cause of the crash at this time,” said Lt. Sean Robertson, adding that it was too early to tell if Thursday’s crash is similar to either of two previous crashes that have occurred in the past five weeks.
