Army offers reward for two missing M-16 rifles

GRAFENWÖHR, Germany — The Army’s Criminal Investigation Command is offering a $2,000 reward for information following the disappearance of two M-16 rifles from Grafenwöhr Training Area.

A CID flier states that the rifles were taken from a tent near Camp Aachen inside the training area on Oct. 1 between the hours of 6:30 and 10:30 p.m.

The incident occurred at the “SOD strip,” a grassy area where helicopters training at Grafenwöhr land to take on fuel and ammunition, the flier states. The area is close to an unfenced section of German highway.

V Corps deputy public affairs spokesman Maj. Richard Spiegel confirmed Tuesday that the unit missing the rifles belongs to the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade, which recently completed training at Grafenwöhr.

Spiegel said soldiers from the unit continue to search for the weapons.

“The unit conducted daily searches throughout the billeting and training area. The military police and the chain of command were informed on Oct. 2, as soon as an initial search was unsuccessful,” he said.

The incident is under investigation by both the unit and CID, he said.
