Re-up money to dry up for 28 MOSs

Re-enlistment bonuses will dry up for 28 more military occupational specialties by Jan. 16, including reconnaissance man, machine gunner and motor vehicle operator, Marine officials said.

The elimination of the bonuses comes as the Corps continues to close specialties to re-enlistment as part of the service’s annual retention cycle. By April, most specialties will be full, Marine officials said. More than two-thirds of the Corps’ 7,037 slots set aside for first-term Marines were already full as of Dec. 10.

Re-enlistment bonuses drying up in reconnaissance is a marked change for the service when compared to recent years. In 2008, for example, a first-term lance corporal could get $61,500 to make a lateral move into the field, with re-up bonuses for some recon Marines as high as $90,000.

For a complete list of the 28 specialties, see Marine administrative message 718/09, published Dec. 17.
